I worked at Home City Ice part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I worked here part-time in the office. My boyfriend was the one who told me they were hiring, they hire friends and family mainly not a lot of job postings for office positions. Kathy was amazing, she worked with my other jobs crazy hours and showed me everything needed to get my job done.

    Cons

    long hours for drivers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Post job listings and stop hiring every driver's buddy.

    Pros

You can make decent money here in college or when you're younger. Other than that, there isnt much room for advancement besides being a plant manager

    Cons

Not much training besides shadowing a driver. It pretty much consists of cautionary messages even though they text and call you while you're driving.

I worked at Home City Ice full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Opportunity for someone with few skills to work a lot of hours and receive an okay paycheck. They hire mostly college students over the summer. Fairly relaxed corporate culture.

    Cons

Memorial Day/4th of July weekends & heatwaves, you are expected to work at least 12 hours, to up to 16 hours per day, back to back. Some guys even worked from 7am-2am a few days! The end of your shift is until finished, so you could work from 7am-10pm depending if they give you a ton of stores with lots of driving. The best I averaged was only $13 an hour during a week, most of the time it was between $11-12, not the $14/hour they advertise. Trucks towards the end of summer kept breaking down, left me stranded for 2 hours one time and since it's commission based I wasn't getting paid for sitting around.
I was never at a weigh station but fully loaded with 9 skids of ice the truck had to be over 26,000 pounds and you would need a cdl license, but the company is too cheap to hire drivers with a cdl and comply with the hourly driving restrictions that come with a cdl.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It isn't safe for drivers to be expected to drive a truck for 15 hours straight during peak summer holiday season. It was never mentioned in the interview that 60 hour work weeks would be the norm.

I worked at Home City Ice part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Great pay for seasonal work. For me avg. $12-14/hr. $900-1200 avg. bi-weekly pay. More thru June-Mid August. I would make more in 3 1/2 months than other college friends would make in a year.
-I could work over the summer and make enough to pay rent and expenses over the school year
-No boss looking over your shoulder all day. Once you leave the plant, you are on your own.
-Flexible days when management is given enough notice. Usually if I needed a specific day off I could get that day off, I might just need to work an extra day before or after to help make up for someone covering that day.
    -More work=more money
    -The longer the drive=better commision.
-When I demonstrated I was a hard and reliable worker, I started getting better routes which turned into better paychecks
-Unit bonus of $8 for selling 2000 units which doesn't sound like much but it does start adding up.

    Cons

-Days can be long 10-12 hours, but if I was working that long I was making good money. Even longer days over the holidays 12-14 hours, but during that time it was $200+ per day. So it is kind of a trade off working longer days for better money. I would start early to combat the longer days.
-Is somewhat physically demanding at first. Once I got the hang of moving the ice around it became routine. (they started these new carts at my location last summer with 4 wheels that I didn't have to tip back or balance which helps)
-Going from outside where its hot to inside cold takes some getting adjusted to.
    -Some customers are very demanding/picky
-Some routes would require long drives (30-40 miles to get to an area)

I have been working at Home City Ice full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Work outside, good workout, work at own pace, no boss watching over you.

    Cons

Hot, no AC or radio in trucks, long hours, pay can vary wildly. You have to do "free" work like driving, or moving someone else's back-stock of ice, etc. Bags are broken and not sealed properly creating additional hours of headaches.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure bags are made properly. Better Customer service. Pay drivers better, hourly.

I worked at Home City Ice part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1. Pretty much your own manager
    2. Take a lunch pretty much whenever your not busy

    Cons

    1. Extremely Long Hours
    2. Usually not done for the day until the manager leaves for the day
    3. Pay is not that great
    4. Sometimes that forget to pay you and have to take the extra time out to figure out what went missing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Train your managers a little bit better,
    2. Teach them about Business Ethics a little bit better
    3. Don't ask for something without giving something (as in don't ask us to work without getting paid).
