Pros
Great working environment.
Advancement for job knowledge is readily available to all associates.
Ability and access to work in other departments.
Great structure from the corporate level advising employees of company programs and concerns.
Cons
Not enough time to learn product knowledge.
Department Supervisors should only be allowed to work as managers on duty when their own departments are fully staffed and customer ready.
Pay for part-time are not incentive for new hires.
Advice to Senior Management
More aprons on the floor and take better care of departments reference shelf and isle maintenance.
Pros
If you work there you learn more about completing things around the home. Being a more do-it-yourself kind of person.
Cons
You will be asked to participate in a number of things that are not apart of your regular job description.
Advice to Senior Management
Worked at Home Depot while I was in school, and even though I was told that it was not a problem, it progressively became one with the management. They were not willing to bend on a lot of things.
Pros
Close to home, several locations, good transition job or for students
Cons
Ass kissing is how to move up, promotions not given on a who's qualified basis.
Nothing is done confidentially.
No appreciation for improved sales or appearance of the store.
Not heard when problems are reported.
Availability must be completely open 24/7
Have to choose either a job or a family, cannot have and enjoy both
Pros
I started at a decent wage for retail, the actual values of the company are great, and you can expect to have customers know you by name and return for your advice.
Cons
Incredibly rare to get a weekend off. Don't expect raises. I've worked at two Home Depot locations and the environment seems a lot like high school.Damaging gossip can spread through associates AND managers like wildfire. Promotions and awards go to associates who are most popular in the store, not for hard work.
Environment is supposed to be focused on customers, yet management will be unhappy if customers prevent you from daily tasking.
Advice to Senior Management
Refer back to the core values of Home Depot. Treat associates with the same respect you wish to be treated with. Follow through with promises to associates. Do not be swayed by gossip and remember to discover the hard workers who aren't flashy. Mediate between associates if problems arise. At my Home Depot I was forced to change departments because of a coworkers complaints about my work ethic. I was appalled when management heeded her complaints and forced me to either accept a non-sales position or termination. I was punished with reduced hours and I have no opportunity to return to sales or receive promotion. Not a reaction I expected from a company with such high faith in their values.
The business is retail, not high school.
Pros
pride, flexibility, interesting projects, fun environment, good co-workers
Cons
- employees looked stressed
- long hours
Advice to Senior Management
give workers more hours of rest
Pros
There is so much that you can learn at Home Depot. And during the time that I was there-I learned to complete special orders in flooring, pro sales (decking, fencing, roofing). I learned to mix paint, make keys, cut carpet and vinyl and I met some really great people of the community.
Cons
If you are a PT employee the benefits are really poor. They don't cover as much as the FT time benefits.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership at the Depot depends strictly on the store mgr. Who he/she places in that dept and the leadership qualities they posses really will reflect their performance and treatment of you.
Pros
hours were good with other commitments outside of work, management was flexible with my schedule. Enjoyed meeting new people and learning a few new skills.
Cons
Seasonal turnover is outrageous, but probably due to the retail industry. No real career growth for male dominated industry, hard to build credibility with customers as a female.
Advice to Senior Management
Diversity and career path training would be good for additional resources, benefits and vacation are not as good as other places I have worked.
Pros
Home depot is a simple place to work, the people are easy going, and there isn't very much to go wrong. I had an excellent experience as far as fellow employees go.
Cons
It may be an "easy" place to work, but it is still retail, and there are still bad customers, people who come in there looking for trouble. As a head cashier, you get to hear some more jaw flapping than if you were just a cashier.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to the little people. Your cashiers, floor staff, and lower levels of management talk with more customers than you on a daily basis, and they get a lot of insight from that.
Pros
good benefits, but gives the younger associates more consideration
Cons
age-seems to compare everyone together instead of looking at the big picture
Advice to Senior Management
Need to put personal feeling for other assistants aside. and deal with each on a one-to-on basis
Pros
There are a lot of other companies that are far worse to work for. It is a fairly secure job.
Cons
The hours are not set so your body is always trying to adjust to the change in sleep every night.
Advice to Senior Management
Your job is very tough with the restraints put on you by the upper levels. Do not let the job efect you health or family life as it has done with so many others in management.
