    Associates very friendly and helpful

    Cashier (Current Employee)
    Orleans, ON (Canada)

    ProsFront end supervisor was very patient during training and beyond

    ConsThe system used for making the schedules is annoying, can end up working several days straight without a day off!

    Advice to Senior ManagementHave a schedule in place that would allow for part time to have the occasional weekend off. Could switch around like the full time, work 3 weekends, get one off?

    People are Great, FT jobs are very scarce, don't think about moving up.

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)

    ProsThe people you work with are amongst the best anywhere! It's nice to be able to move during your work day, customer service focus is fantastic, they empower employees to make a sale, nice to be able to work in jeans!

    ConsHardly any hours, computer driven (impersonal) scheduling, low hours given, hands-off management, reviews done by non-present management makes for unfair assessments. Demands on your time are huge (available from 6am to 11 pm most days) need to work every and all weekend for PTs and almost EVERYONE is PT.

    Advice to Senior ManagementRotate weekends off even for part timers to allow a personal or family life outside of HD. Don't have managers who do NOT work the department with an employee do the reviews.

    Contrary to what many people say, you are well taken care of in many ways...but you need to put in the work.

    Department Supervisor (Current Employee)
    Toronto, ON (Canada)

    ProsCompany training is paid and is quite extensive even for entry-level associate positions. The company gives you a lot of valuable Product Knowledge training to better assist your customers. The company also offers very competitive benefits for full-time associates, and part-timers even receive some benefits, which is unheard of at almost every other company! As the review title says, associates are well taken care of in direct and indirect ways, and there is a lot of room for advancement, but only if you are willing to put in the work for it.

    ConsWhile Home Depot does offer very extensive paid training, their web-based training and internal systems are not the fastest or most reliable, so you will often find that the time given to you for training is not enough and extra time will not be given. A much less cumbersome internal system would make computer work a lot easier. While Home Depot strives to be "#1 in customer service", it allows customers to abuse the system and store employees because store management is not given the proper authority or backbone to enforce company policies.

    Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management and HR managers should ALWAYS be approachable for any concerns and questions from employees. I have had store managers and HR managers who were not very approachable and thus associates felt helpless and a lack of pride to work for Home Depot. Salaried managers and associates have a symbiotic relationship and both must work together to create the best working environment and the highest productivity.

    Brutal, demanding, but it is the nature of the beast

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

    Proseasy-in; common sense carries a lot of weight in interview; part-time benefits; able to excel, but it comes at a price;

    Cons- low pay - want the knowledge base of a pro for minimal wages;
    - too many moral-ethical conflicts regarding sales at all costs, i.e. pushing credit cards and return policies;
    - staffing based on sales, but low staffing = low sales. It is a downward spiral;
    - training is info based, not context based. Customers rarely want to know the features of a piece of equipment - they want to know how they can do this, that or the other thing. Current training does not answer to this need.

    Advice to Senior ManagementPeople, not sales, are your bottom line. Poor and dissatisfied employees create poor and dissatisfied customers which affect your bottom line. Stop managing hours to sales and provide more in the way of job regularity, i.e. no reason why a part time employee cannot be scheduled regular hours on specific days. It does not need to be constantly in flux. Stop with 'hero cult' for employee recognition and start recognizing the 'tried and true'. Update the training to be done by real people within a real context, not this scripted foolishness that numbs the brain. Stick to your original mandate and stop trying to put everyone else out of business. Clean up the back office operations so that employees can actually do their job properly and in a timely manner, rather than finessing the schedule to gain greater profitability.

    Great People to work "with", not "for".

    Part Time Sales (Current Employee)

    Pros* cheerful, enthusiastic team members
    * great team environment
    * customers can be extremely appreciative of attentive customer service
    * Probably a fantastic job for people who don't like their homelife, or are single.

    Cons* ONLY scheduled for weekends, every weekend. Asking for a few hours off on a Saturday to attend a function for my 8 year old son was met with disapproval as it affected their peak sales hours. Yet, I wasn't given ANY work during the week, so was averaging 15 hours a week, but had to give 100% availability.
    * not appreciated when going above the call of duty, yet are expected to cover for the staff that quit at a moments notice
    * the work boots are *really* hard on your feet after a 9 hour (8 paid) work day
    * Good luck getting time off approved. I asked for 2 days consecutive over a 6 month period and was denied as it fell on a weekend. Coworkers 25th anniversary request also denied. That is just their culture.
    * are frequently expected to close until 11pm, then open the next morning at 6am. With bus, or even car transportation (Home Depots are frequently NOT in suburban areas, so require travel) this is not good for employees health or morale).

    Advice to Senior ManagementHonestly, it is mostly about your bottom line, but realize that you have HUMANS working for you. If you ONLY schedule people on the weekends, and yet insist on open availability - the lack of money but loss of family life will wear down every good aspect of the job. Home Depot talks a good game, but does so, in my opinion, only for the PR value. They do not translate this into their treatment of employees.
