Pros
- Good compensatio
- Evolving in canada so that gives good opportunity for growth
Cons
- some times there is toomuch politics
Advice to Senior Management
- Try to fit right people in right roles. Some of the poeple are miss fit and not utilised porperly
Pros
Opportunity to become subject matter expert and advise customers and assist with solving their problems. Great job if you have a desire to help others.
Cons
Management not flexible with changing availability after being hired; difficult to maintain work/life balance in face of such inflexibility. Management needs stronger tools to create safety culture and hold workers accountable for safety compliance.
Advice to Senior Management
Be open to individual ideas and criticisms, and learn from them without distraction due to taking them personally. Have upper management regularily ask sales associates what they need to do their job best, and honestly seek to understand and satisfy those needs. If you treat your employees well, they will do right by you, and make your customers happy.
Ms. Verschuren, since same store revenues have dropped for more than 3 consecutive years, this demonstrates that customers are dissatisfied - they brand promise has not been delivered. The satisfaction level of store employees should be evaluated without prejudice, and their voices listened to. Customer satisfaction will always follow - upwards or downwards - in direct relation to employee satisfaction. You can't help customers, if you don't first help your staff.
Pros
It is an alright place to work. During college/university they will pay for half your tuition as long as you keep up decent grades. Besides that
Cons
they usually throw you on the floor with insufficient training. Few co-workers, customers complain there is no one to help them, they are usually right.
Furthermore, do not bother working your a$$ off because they will not give you a raise, the manager will think of a million different excuses not to give you a raise. I've been there for 3 years getting amazing reviews, but only getting paid around 11$ per hour, some other guy came in and got paid 14$+ per hour his first day on! Only causes frustration for me.
Advice to Senior Management
treat employees fairly.
Pros
My advice for anyone looking to work here is simple. You must be one of two types for employees: a) Ambitious with a killer work ethic and dedication, striving for "a little extra" or b) Passive with the notion of just "Get in- get the job done-get out". If you are the former of the two, then The Home Depot is not for you. If you are the latter type, you are at the right place. Time and time again, I have seen people who work their butts off being compensated the same way as people who just look busy but do nothing.
They offer minimum wage for the work that requires physical effort and have a salary review once a year where they barely catch up to market inflation. Don't get me wrong, people are very friendly and there is not much of a pressure to perform from the management.
A very good place for people with special needs or those who have been victims of domestic abuse, hoping to make some dough as they hire a lot of them without discrimination.
Cons
Company practices a lot of cheap tactics to get one employee do the work of two or more. This means that several times, the store will be short staffed and customers simply walk out because of lack of service.
Management will have a lot of personality issues, which lead to employees being left out high and dry. A place mostly consisting of retirees or high-school graduates, Home Depot is not the best place to make a career. Few emplyees receive full-time status and everyone is kept at an hourly wage. Your hours and work schedule varies from week to week and you simply CANNOT do overtime as it is viewed as taboo.
Advice to Senior Management
If someone doesn't show any resppect for their job, let them leave. Do not practice nepotism. Please put the customers first as they will eventually keep the store running in the first place.
Pros
Brand Name organization. 2nd biggest Retailer in the World. The employees down in Atlanta have a lot more offerings compared to employees in Canada. More access to systems that allow advance reporting and less number crunching manually in Atlanta vs. Canada.
Cons
Highly Political Environment. Need to know people ASAP and make your moves otherwise you will be sitting on the same chair for years to come.
I'd like to add that you'd be surprised how compensation is very unique even within the same teams and how titles are allotted. On my team there were 3 analysts. One dude with a MBA + CMA and strong work experience of 5 yrs in Automotive Giant about a lil over a year in Telecom but was given the Financial Analyst title whereas another member who joined later on with a Bachelors in Math and 3 yrs of experience in telecom was given a Sr. Financial Analyst role sooo go figure
Advice to Senior Management
Be Fair dont just go by whatever Sr. Managers say about their associates I believe in this process Home Depot lost employees who were sincere to the organization and had a long term committment with HD.
Pros
There are different shifts to work from. Most managers are at least somewhat flexible with scheduling. Pay is not bad for retail. There is room for advanacement.
Cons
I don't necessarily want my friends to see me wearing an orange apron. Like all retail jobs, you will run into nasty or stupid customers.
Advice to Senior Management
Management seems to do a competent job. At my level I am not privy to the demands they face. I am sure they are doing the best they can with what they have. They seem to value those who put in the effort.
Pros
security and stability. very seldem to get laid off unless you are not doing the job. Never need to worry about not getting paid.
Cons
inconsistent management skills and communication. Supervisors/managers says one thing and does another. too many chiefs and not enough indians. never know what to do to excel to more senior level unless you "get friendly" with management team. bottom line, doing a good job is not enough if you want to move up. it may take a long time or the right manager to recognise your ability to help moving you up.
Advice to Senior Management
listen to us more often! Have clearer expectations set out for staff to know what they can do to excel.
Pros
Large organization with corporate cultural events instilling pride in company brand. Interesting to understand the underlying mechanics of merchandising and overall structure of a market leader. Well furnished, modern office. Tasks were structured with no surprises, assuming you consider that an advantage. Pay was good at the time.
Cons
Extremely small finance department consisting of one group with little horizontal movement. Only way to get promoted is for manager or director to leave. No real way to develop any depth of finance experience or skill. Tasks were standardized with little room for any real value add.
Advice to Senior Management
Consider some way for job diversification.
