Pros
The company is quite flexible with regards to part time hours, particularly with students.
The work can be quite fulfilling at times, especially helping customers who truly need help to properly complete a project.
Opportunities to gain knowledge.
Some very knowledgeable associates and vendors.
Recently instituted a health and benefits package for part time associates.
Cons
No employee discount.
On the job training is lacking.
Current Sales Associates take personal responsibility for training new associates rather than management.
The employee stock purchase plan is not worth anything because the Home Depot stock is decreasing.
Store, department, and assistant managers do not regularly help in departments, and when they do help frequently give improper advice or refuse to seek help if they are not qualified to answer a customers questions.
There is an over-reliance on metrics when assigning hours weekly, this causes under staffing issues when some weeks are more busy than others.
When associates call in sick, there are usually no reserve associates who can be called in, causing under staffing issues.
Advice to Senior Management
Please ensure that there is greater opportunities for sales associate training. Many departments require very specialized knowledge that is not covered under the WBT or in PK training with vendors. Examples include details of local building codes or safety requirements. Please also ensure that each department is adequately staffed, it is difficult for customers and associates when a department, or many departments do not have adequate coverage.
Pros
A great support group of associates when experiencing stress on the job. And some stand-out, but few, amazing supervisors.
Cons
It is agreed among associates at the Home Depot Canada that there are "too many Chiefs and not enough Indians". They do not have the bodies to fill the sales floor and provide customers with the satisfaction they seek and have seen in popular media advertising. Instead, the many on duty managers and supervisors are too preoccupied by their store phones and blackberries to ease the congestion of customer dissatisfaction.
Advice to Senior Management
Be on the floor more often, work nights, and work weekends occasionally. Be a sales associate once a week. Appreciation and consideration of the work of your employees should be recognized outside of the VOC system and occasional employee appreciation lunch.
