    Pros

Home Retail Group are a fair and good employer. They expect a very high standard of work, professionalism and commitment from their staff but recognise and reward excellent performance very well. They support their staff providing good training and always try to promote from within. They offer good opportunities to move between departments and within the group. Senior management effectively communicate all changes in company objectives so all management grades on clear on what has changed and why. A first rate retailer and exceptional employer.

    Cons

They are sometimes unrealistic in their expectations of what their teams can deliver in tight timescales given. This can frustration within teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give teams more realistic timescales to meet deadlines so the quality and quantity of output is maximised.

    Pros

Pay is good as is the working environment, good promotion chance and ability to develop current skills and learn new ones.

    Cons

shift patters can make family life hard as late shifts or early starts make it a juggling act and extremely difficult to balance if you dont have help from family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All staff should be given a fair chance on shifts no matter how long they have been working for the company. Could also look at the bike 2 work scheme as car park is often full or even expanding car park (making it multi story)

    Pros

The money was quite good for what it was, it wasn't far to travel to and the staff discount of 10% at Argos and 20% at Homebase was pretty good

    Cons

Don't quite know where to start. Awful managers who are useless and do no work, who allow their favourites to also be useless and do no work. The few good workers carry the many shirkers and who do you complain to about the very people you should be able to complain to. Shocking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The whole company needs a root and branch clear out.

    Pros

Runs smoothly. No question or queries about who is responsible for delivering what and the deadline.

    Cons

Creatively stifling environment and very corporate. This prevents some talented people from really shining.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Capitalise on the creative skills of the workforce and streamline the unnecessary processes.

    Pros

Company values at Home Retail Group are clear and communicated well to its staff. I made great friends while working there.

    Cons

I was under-utilised by the company. I had regular meetings with the after-sales team in order to provide feedback and insight into issues communicated to our department but was penalised for this as the rest of the team did not have these meetings, which was their decision to make.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe that the company would progress if it were to listen more to its front-line employees. There is so much more potential within those departments than they realise.

    Pros

    Transforming fast so exciting
    Good benefits
    Reasonable pay
    Nice people
    Focused CEO

    Cons

If you work for group rather than Argos or Homebase you don't feel part of anything
    No HR strategy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some strong professional HR leaders who know how to both create and implement HR strategy and focus on employee engagement rather than be yes men/women to the finance bully's.
Trust , ask and listen, stop paying consultants to fix what we could fix ourselves if you only asked!

    Pros

Friendly, they listen, never a dull moment, stores are a very family-like environment at times. A very positive place to work

    Cons

Not always enough hours to go around to earn a living wage and insistence on flexible hours means often staff can't get a second job around their Home Retail job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep listening to your employees, and you'll keep going in the right direction.
