    Pros

The amount of work is reasonable, no compensation though, leadership is not so great but acceptable.

    Cons

There are no benefits for some of the workers, maybe because they are on contract basis. No room for improvement so no promotions to say.

The buyout by Homeland Foods has resulted in another step down for employees and not better service for customers.

I have been working at Homeland Stores full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It is a job when the economy does not offer much. Since it is not owned privately, at least the company can't be sucked dry by a few individuals as Bill White & his family did and then escape without much personal consequences through bankruptcy. It does provide a lot of items geared to people struggling to make ends meet. There are some good people working in the store who try really hard to do a good job despite poor pay and benefits.

    Cons

The corporate management does not listen to employees who know what local customers want. They stock items that do not always sell very well. Their management style is confusing and they do not reward good employees. They keep changing the rules. They tell employees they will have vacation when they took over and then changed it to after they have been in their employment a year. Then they say it is only salaried employees. They continue as the previous owner to shift to part time employees where there are not enough hours to perform all responsibilities. I am not sure what the "employee owned" means to the employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Reward them with benefits such as vacation. Do not depend so much on part time employees. You will attract better employees through full-time positions. You need to monitor the # of hours the salaried store dept heads are in the store.

    Pros

It is an environment where it is easy to excel if you simply work hard and treat the customers well. I loved working there all during high school and college. I've met some very adept managers as well as some adults who stayed in entry level positions far too long.

    Cons

Limited opportunities for advancement and career progression.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it up. Homeland may not be able to beat everyone's prices, but it is a nicer environment to shop in.

    Pros

It's a paycheck, that's about all. Some of your co-workers are good, nice individuals. Yet that is likely true of almost anywhere. I can't think of any positives that would make this a desirable place to build a future.

    Cons

Expect nothing because that is what you will get and that is what you'll be. You are not valued, you will not be valued, you a just there to do a job.

Avoid the union like the plague, it is a money trap, they do nothing for you. They tell you this that and the other thing, but the proof is in the pudding trust me. Also if you do join your in for 1 year no exception. Just give away $40 a month out of minimum wage. Don't say you weren't warned!

In essence this should be a 6 month or less bridge to a different job, nothing more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try undercover boss! You'll quickly realize why this franchise is inevitably bound for extinction. With anything less than a massive middle management overhaul.

    Pros

If you are a manager, your pay is fine. The people on the lower end are nice.

    Cons

The company does not care about their employees. Insurance is terrible. The customers are never satisfied. We are always short handed because the company cuts hours every week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about employees and give more hours.

I have been working at Homeland Stores

    Pros

If you're in the right store, its a nice place and the people treat you decently. Once you settle with experience there, they allow you to do other things such as facing objects through out the store.

    Cons

The pay is terrible for what they work you. The scheduling and their ability to let you know is just dumb. Nothing there is up to date except for the useless screen instead of something productive, like new programing. The checkout stations are definitely not kept well and are as old as the store. Half of the electronics just simply don't work. Don't ever call in sick, they just simply won't care and they rely too heavily on individuals.
