Don't care about the customer or the employee

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Walsall, England (UK)

I worked at Homeserve full-time for more than a year

ProsMy direct line manager was the best manager I have ever had - although that was more down to him than the company.
My team were a great bunch of people to work with.
I was (eventually) treated with respect and listened to.

ConsMorally bankrupt company - company direction (not just sales staff) was to knowingly design and sell policies to people that they would never be able to claim on, and then even if they could claim, they would do everything in their power to get out of paying the claim if they thought they could get away with it. Not because they wanted to deliberately treat customers badly, but because it was too hard to come up with anything else. Annoyed just about every regulator going (FCA, Oftel, etc), and practices had the potential to annoy the others if they ever found out about it. The huge FCA fine recently was deserved.
Working in IT, I saw many good people leave, and many poor staff stay or get rehired. There were a couple of real stinkers hired whilst I was there, and although they eventually left, it took a long time for management to notice how poor they really were. Considering it was such a small department, that is really unforgivable. The IT systems suffered from chronic under investment, and there were too many managers making decisions on things that they quite frankly didn't understand. All the projects that were run were either not delivered, or significantly late and over budget. There was a lot of 'pet projects' run by people who weren't interested in the good of the company, but wanted something good on their CV - and if they were among the favoured few, then they got incredible leeway to do as they pleased.
Discipline within IT was pretty much non-existent. You were either pulled up for the smallest of infractions or allowed to get away with shocking behaviour.
There was never a sense of pulling together and all trying to achieve a common goal, because there was never a common goal to achieve. The company direction was non-existent (other than squeeze the customer) and management turnover was high. One senior manager lasted six months (on a six month notice period!). Management meddling was high, and staff dissatisfaction was immense. People were promoted not because they were the best person for the job, but because their face fit or they were mates with management.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook up moral and ethical in a dictionary. Treat your customers fairly and your employees with respect. Look those words up too.

Not for Everyone. Read below.

Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Miami, FL

I have been working at Homeserve

ProsNice area to work. And its better than being unemployed. The company itself has doubled in size in a years time. Not the number of employees, but the amount customers they service. With this being said, the company itself is not going out of business in this economy that is important.

ConsIf you are applying at Homeserve for Inbound sales department, these are things to know prior to even applying;

Expect your pay to be very inconsistent, the commission structure is set up to either reduce your pay or make sure you arent allowed to collect your hard earned bonus. The going rate at Homeserve since the date of this posting is 10 dollars an hour. If you excel at various categories then you will be awarded higher pay. This structure is desgned to ensure minimal pay is earned as often as possible. So basically how you perform one month will determine your Hourly pay for the following month. Management knows this structure is the cause for them losing so much great talent and have been promising changes for over a year now. Still no changes. These statements are not intended to bash the company nor is any of this false. I just have to make sure that those that are seeking employment here, know exactly the terms of their compensation. Please ask them upfront for commission structure information along with hourly rate and if this amount ever fluctuates, not in your favor.

Also you must be a tough individual to work here. Homeserve is a home insurance company that promises their customer to live worry-free of home emergencies, This appeals to the elderly population, who fail to read terms and conditions which deny them of being indeed "covered".
I have listed some of the general exclusions that Homeserve customers are denied by:

*emergency breakdown , *Acts of God, and *pre-existing conditions. So what I am saying is that if you have a righteous attitude, this may not be the best place to work. You will witness alot of questionable decisions being made against someone who is of age, that can be your own grandparents. You will get calls from elderly people who are crying because they dont have any heat and are cold because their heating systems where determined to be damaged by an pre-exisitng condition. And you will have to turn them away. Then turn around and sell to another elderly person that lives in that same area. As long as you can remain focused on achieving as many sales as possible than you this is the job for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementOnce in for all, set an hourly rate that will not flutuate against your sales representatives favor. Think about rewarding those who speak multiple languages, Examine the message you portrait when you express favortism by hiring who you are comfortable with versus the actual better candidate.

exciting because of the growth but a company without values

Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Homeserve full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDue to sheer aggressive nature about getting results on the bottom line, the company keeps growing internationally, and this creates a lot of opportunities for growth

ConsThe values that are pasted all over the walls are basically inexistent when it comes to doing the actual work

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen your eyes and have a look around you, people are not happy. Try to understand why and do something about it.

Horrible company, avoid at all costs. Clueless, directionless and a sinking ship out of touch.

Manager (Former Employee)
Birmingham, England (UK)

I worked at Homeserve full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPays well, benefits are far greater than average.

ConsComplete lack of genuine company direction, putting the customer at the heart logo is a myth to placate the FCA and mitigate the fines.
This company essentially sells useless policies to people who really don't need them whilst making every effort to not satisfy contracts. Leave your moral compass at home.
Very incestuous environment, chosen few protected and rewarded, lots of people removed and settle on compromises.
Senior Management are massively out of their depth and fail to deliver on promises and predictable, repeatable management cliches.
Zero investment in staff (IT)
Too many chiefs, multiple directors of nothing, of which the churn is huge, thus no vision seen through and delivered.
Too many initiatives stall and fail to be delivered.
The capable members of departments are often over looked for the more vocal continual failures.
Blame culture is chronic and perpetuated by lack of management support whose self interest are bonused on are consistently selfish.
Senior management are consistently CV focused and deliver what suits them, and not what the business actually needs.
Lies, lies and more lies despite overwhelming material evidence to undermine.
Dishonest management miss reporting actual failures and hiding failures to cover personal incompetence.
Too many people walking around with protein shakes.
Too many people wearing cloths that don't fit.
High staff turnover due to unhappiness and lack of faith in management.
Lack of boundaries and roles and responsibilities, promoting glory hunters and self fuelled fraudulent over time.
Complete lack of awareness around individuals and deliverables.
Imbalance of work load, some teams are under pressure, some surf all day
HR lose contracts, and manufacture alternatives to suit with completely different terms and forged signatures.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe realistic and engage with the staff at all levels. Realise people are leaving because of you (IT)

Caring and committed staff - terrible Senior Management

Team Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Homeserve full-time for more than 3 years

ProsStaff are committed and highly trained
Real sense of caring for customers in business
Implimentation of robust and purpose built systems/processes

ConsPoor Leadership from Senior Management
Poor structure
Company uses secondments during peak times and then discards staff from senior positions during off peak periods

Advice to Senior ManagementRemove seconded roles - if a member of staff is good enough to work in a position during peak periods - surely they do not deserve to be demoted when in off peak periods

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Product Manager (Former Employee)
Walsall, England (UK)

I worked at Homeserve

ProsYoung, forward thinking company
Leadership team are energetic and passionate
Truly marketing led organisation
Decisions are made quickly
Management prepared to take risks
No blame culture

ConsCompany lacks customer focus - decisions are made for the benefit of the business
You need to leave your morals at the door if you want to be happy here
Lacks structure for personal development, career progression etc

Advice to Senior ManagementGreater importance needs to be placed on meeting customers needs - not driving the bottom line.
