A once-great company that has clearly lost it's way.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great place to get experience.
An industry that drives constant innovation in its products.
Good location, Columbus is a hidden gem in the midwest.
    Good medical benefits.

    Cons

No flexibility in the manufacturing departments.

Too many "benefits" left to individual department discretion - no consistency across the company.

Salary is generally 20% less than similar jobs at other OEM's.

No ability to easily move across the company - department managers can, and often do, block associates from changing jobs.

Poor communication of goals and objectives

Company has shifted from a culture of building consensus among stake holders to being managed from a top-down direction.

    No accountability for poor performance.

No effort, on the part of the company, to retain good engineers who work hard. No incentive for young engineers to stay and buy in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Stop benchmarking other Honda plants and take time to SERIOUSLY benchmark other OEMs in terms of salaries and benefits. We're losing good people at an alarming rate. The problem with only looking to Honda DNA for innovation is your family tree never branches.

    2. Stop preaching about going to the spot and actually do it.

    3. Consensus among stakeholders was once a fundamental way we did business. We need to get back to this way of doing business. Being top-down is no different that many of our competitors.

    4. Stop promoting people only based on business needs and actually reward high performers for just simply being good at their jobs. Someone doesn't need to lead people to be great at what they do.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Job security up to now.
Very good pay and benefits so far.
In the beginning you were the expert and decentralized management was the philosophy. Now centralized management is the way.
Safety, Quality and the customer was the goal, now only Quantity.

    Cons

    Very hard and physical work.
The Honda philosophy is dead and forgotten.
Management has no clue as to how to run this company efficiently.
Moral is worse than I have ever seen it.
All tools used by the associates (suggestions, quality etc.) have been so diluted they are worthless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn and understand the Honda philosophy!
Stop finding the blame and find the problems.
    Quality costs nothing!
    Listen to the experts.
Solve the problem don't band-aid it!
Advancement from within is very slight.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Pay
    - You do get medical benefits......but they are being reduced.
    - On site wellness center.............if you have the time or energy to go.

    Cons

    - Hard Physical Labor
    - Long daily hours. Some departments at Engine plant are 7 days mandatory
    - You get 15 days vacation but on average 15 weekends are taken away by forced mandatory production. No real benefit here!
    - Most job injuries are disputed by the company forcing the employee to fight for the benefits deserved
    - No job security for those with many years of service. Jobs are being contracted out on a regular basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Start talking to the employees that have put many years in making the company what it was!
    - Promote people based on experience, knowledge and training, not on who you know.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Get to talk to your co-workers during the work day.

    Cons

Monotonous, mind-numbing, work; low wages; no advancement; your life belongs to Honda - family, school, outside interests - say "Adios, Amigos!"; 6 day work weeks common (and after a while, time and a half is not very motivating); most of staff is contingency - don't even THINK of being hired on as a Honda associate, and that is the only way to earn a good wage here; benefits STINK! Don't even THINK about getting sick. Keep a close eye on your paycheck each week......

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Who is running this circus?? The "new robots" we have can't be fixed, and you're getting more new ones?? I'll never see the end of a work day!!

    Pros

    Good people
    Exciting work
    Opportunities to learn

    Cons

    Slow decision making process
    Limited opportunity to advance
    Micro-managers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start with the basic organizational structure and start over. Stop pandering to mediocrity and start looking at the select few employees that are carrying the load. Keep them happy, you can easily replace the rest. Stop promoting solely on the basis of technical skill and look for people with the vision and charisma to be LEADERS.

I worked at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

lean culture, respect for all employees - uniforms for everyone including CEO.
good products and strong flexible manufacturing processes. 2 weeks of plant shutdown every year for added vacation time.

    Cons

all employees must be considered with equal respect which causes some friction with the manufacturing associates versus office associates. work schedule is not flexible, no sick days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to find talent in your team as the jobs (constraints) may not show case all potential talent for individuals.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay, great benefits, great place to start your career

    Cons

Little opportunity for advancement. Some abnormal rules for a professional environment (no water at desk, clock in clock out, working on the line as needed...) IF you are able to advance, the increase in pay does not match the increase in workload and responsibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a better way of encouraging professional growth. Pay more for education and recognize addition education in evaluations.
