Pros
Good opportunities for growth, great place to start a career in the end it is a very off shoring company.
Cons
You may lose your job to another country very fast, poor performance in the rough economy, hiring freezes, salary furloughs
Advice to Senior Management
Try to get out of this economy strong, help to stabilize the workforce, moral is terrible so work to help that as well
Pros
They had a good program for getting additional education. They had a decent facility. Pretty decent benefits. Some groups you can get involved in.
Cons
An old boys network and most of the workforce was ready to retire. The management did not know how to bid on projects and had mandatory overtime to make the bids look more accurate.
Advice to Senior Management
It seemed as though managers were getting paid based on how many people they managed. Which meant that some managers just wanted to increase their numbers for no other reason than to make mor emoney. This caused some unethical practices.
Pros
Diversified company with breadth and depth of product lines
Working with many intelligent people
Performance based and Knowledge sharing culture
Cons
Long hours due to high expectation to get things done
Pay and benefits cut in 2009
Somewhat political and competitive workforce
Advice to Senior Management
Recognize and Reward your band 3 (non-leader/managerial) employees more frequently. It does not have to be monetary, but will definitely boost morale in this tough and unrewarding times.
Pros
Changing positions within company is very accepted, even encouraged. Common to move between departments - from manufactuing to engineering to test etc. Dress code is very casual. There are still a fair amount of smart people left. Fairly acceptable to flex time to meet outside personal commitments. Benefits are on par relative to other companies.
Cons
Dissent or voicing a opinion different from upper management's is not tolerated. Firings for "cause" are not uncommon. Layoffs continue to be a constant threat, regardless of the amount of work or budget a project has. Review system forces employees to compete, which erodes teamwork and cooperation. Retirees medical benefits were eliminated. Educational reimbursement was just capped, but it's a moot point since very, very few people get approved anyway. Directors don't want to rock the boat by asking to spend money on training. Engineers are viewed as interchangable, which forces lots of on the job training and inefficiencies. Pay was cut 10% but workload and schedule is the same as before. Paycut was levied in a manner that cannot be rationalized as fair by any definition. 401k match was cut. R& D is minimal, focus is on squeezing costs out of old product only. Average age at our site is upper 40's to lower 50's. Large pay discrepancies are common, and are not addressed.
Advice to Senior Management
Employees are well aware that their pay has been cut while upper management's has not. They have not even taken a symbolic cut as a show of solidarity with the frontline employees below. Plan seems to be to shift all work offshore, regardless of cost. High overseas turnover makes knowledge transfer difficult before existing onshore employees retire, quit due to the horrible morale, or are simply laid off.
Pros
Good opportunities for training
Quality, intelligent co-workers
Good benefits
Cons
Churn and burn place
Most newbies are considered "outsiders" so you really have to work the relationships to get things done (highly political)
If action items are not included on people's bonus action plan, don't expect to get a lot of help to get things done
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
Great place to coast, with the occasional misuse by management. No need to grow here, there is no expectation for you to do so.
Cons
Your hard work will not be recognized if you don't fit the template:heterosexual white male who voted for George W. Bush and whose wife is a stay-at-home mom. If you're an Asian with a Ph.D. you will be treated like a mad scientist--you can yell and mistreat African Americans and Latins so long as white male heterosexuals who voted for Bush think you're a genius, which as long as you keep that stereotypical Asian disposition going will be forever. Just keep pronouncing English with an "r," if you know what I mean. If you're not either of the aforementioned, good luck buddy.
Advice to Senior Management
Get a new corporate culture and purge all the "old thinking" people in management. Start making the people who've been there forever pull their weight and update their skills.
Pros
Robust package, solid career potential.
Cons
Culture clash found in pockets of the organization, aging workfoce, lack of flexibility in corporate policies, politics play a major roll in promotions beyond managerial level.
Advice to Senior Management
Cater to the employees, restructure the incentive plans. The organization is top heavy without empowering the workers a lack of personal responsibility results. Re-evaluate executive compensation vs. reducing employee satisfaction or decay is inevitable. Top talent and potential future leaders will be leaving the company.
Pros
Great benefits and good leadership. While it can matter alot which department you are in, management has been very understanding and honest with the recent downturn and that is very appreciated.
Cons
The industry is cyclical and the downturns can be tough. It is a slower moving company since their products have 20+ year life cycles.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the honesty and don't forget about the employees when the economy recovers. Everyone understands making sacrifices in tough times but good times need to be rewarded too!
Pros
Great pay and benefits. Understanding of personal life and work balance.
Cons
Too much middle-management. Very large corporate structure.
Advice to Senior Management
Mainstream management.
Pros
They have been very good at allowing me to be flexible with my time. Because of this, I can attend to personal matters when they come up.
Cons
I was hired with the expectation of doing one type of work, and I am doing nothing remotely close to the work & direction that I would like to take in my career. They cut off overtime, then cut pay 10%, they changed the rules on tuition reimbursement, and they are still hinting at lay-offs. I'd prefer to keep my 10% and take my chances with lay-offs. They are also yanking retirement medical coverage for people who chose the old system over the "one-time-cash-out" system they adopted in the late 90s.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop outsourcing work to India and Mexico.
