I have been working at Hood & Strong full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Really nice people, large client base, interesting clients and work

    Cons

It's public accounting so the hours can be long when a deadline is approaching but hours aren't too bad compared to larger firms.

I have been working at Hood & Strong full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great clients, nice people, professional but friendly environment. Most partners are young and older partners care about succession planning. Coming from national CPA firm I was pleasantly surprised how large and complex some on the clients are. Associates truly get exposure to all type of work and the training programs are excellent and work life balance is emphasized.

    Cons

More happy hours is always good:)

    Cons

It's public accounting so sometimes you are working longer hours during busy season but compared to most larger firms it's not too bad.

I worked at Hood & Strong

    Pros

Great CPE and technical support on accounting and auditing topics
Fast pace - you're not stuck working on 1 section of the BS/IS for weeks or months
Audit and Tax departments are completely segregated

    Cons

    Majority of clients are NFP
Poor management skills from managers and partners
Job selections, promotions and job evaluations are biased
    Absolutely no work/life balance
Work long hours for low pay
Not enough time to complete audit assignments
    Staff turnover is too high
Too much in-house fighting among colleagues

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, it was not the greatest experience working at H&S. Management needs to recognize the hard work their employees put in, allow enough time to complete jobs and set aside enough time to finish the backlog of clients on their desks. This is probably unlikely since most of the clients are NFPs and are always seeking to lower the fee which leads to less time to finish the audit.

    Pros

Interesting Not for profit client portfolio
Small firm so there are more opportunities to standout if you are a top performer

    Cons

Not so much of work/life balance
Working a lot to complete various audits at the same time
Staff turnover at each assignment was higher

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote people from within. Also provide feedback more regularly. Establish professional and development goals for employees so they can see and measure their performance

Frustrating experience. Communication from management is limited and expectations are not always based on reality.

    -No work/life balance
-No clear pathways of communication to resolve issues
-Several managers and partners with a serious deficiency in management / communication skills
