I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You will learn how to deal with change within your department and other departments you work with closely. Great opportunity to learn the P&C business if you are willing to walk around and talk to people.

Decent retirement benefits and paid days off. Bonus structure is generous for lower ranks.

CEO has a vision of how to grow an already profitable company.

    Cons

Change - constant, frequent, disruptive, sometimes unfocused change. Management has good ideas on how to implement Senior Leadership's vision, but difficulty with smooth execution (one department has gone through 3 restructurings this year alone).

Very title-heavy organization. I've never seen a company with so many AVP's.

Incentives are less than industry average for my specialty; low cost of living locally, so the balance isn't too far off the mark. Documentation and training lag behind directional changes. There is little room for vertical advancement; must switch departments to grow professionally. Lack of adequate communication about directional and org changes.

I'll mention the same thing I've read in other reviews: management is quick to say "changes are coming, hang in there", but beneficial change is slow to come. I suspect this is due to the bureaucracy of HR, or senior management, and not the choice of the lower-level managers.

All-in-all, this is a solid company that is undergoing significant changes due to a new CEO that came on board in 2013. The new leadership seems to be banking on new systems to solve their ills without understanding a reasonable timetable to complete a systems migration project. The current system is grossly outdated and the products we offer are somewhat limited by system constraints. Because of the direction the company is headed, the systems migration project is getting seemingly unlimited $ and new personnel while our department is shrinking due to attrition from those leaving for other opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train, execute, and pay/promote for performance.

The new system is a great future solution, but don't forget the short-term needs of departments and employees.

Keep heading us in the right direction; empower the managers below and hold them accountable to get the departments in shape and on board.

Create promotional opportunities to grow the company from within. Allow people to grow within their departments instead of necessitating departmental switching for growth opportunities.

Hold lackluster performers accountable for their missteps. Education, accountability, and execution are what will get the company where the CEO wants us to go.

    Pros

New CEO, improved distribution marketplace, greater focus on life cycle for target market, emphasis on teamwork model concepts, good benefits, and industry education programs

    Cons

Challenging technology systems that undermine processes and improvements. Various layers of organizational structure that impedes delivery on Customer experience and processes. Work life balance is challenging and needs improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to instill the company's brand message, throughout the target market life cycle and life experiences. Invest in distribution force, technology, training, education, claims, operations and sales. Reevaluate the emphasis on layers of VPs in the company ranks and how each supports the company's goals and directions.

    Pros

Coworkers aren't just people, they become your friends. Good vacation/sick/personal time even for new hires. Big company in a small town (100K population) so traffic isn't hard. Free parking, flexible hours, big donator to community and target market. Yearly bonus when targets are hit.

    Cons

Technology is hilariously old, system run on mainframes from 1950s/60s. Insanely hard to get management to actually do anything that moves the company forward. Way too much management, red tape, and lack of interest in new ideas. Too many upper-level folks from All State, State Farm, etc. bringing their cronies in. This is HM, not AS or SF, so run it as such!

Job descriptions change yearly, but you never actually do those things. Seating arrangements hardly make sense, so much change in personnel makes your team too fluid to really gel. Performance reviews are a perpetual joke. No matter your skill level or knowledge, they'll can you if they want to. Big brain drain recently: too many drones, not enough innovators, frustration sets in quickly among those who want to move forward instead of stagnate personally and in your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut your numbers in half. Then cut your pay about 25% and distribute it where it belongs -- the employees who actually do the work. Listen to your employees -- if they tell you not to hire someone (twice!), don't! And for the love of god, bite the financial bullet and upgrade your technology to the 21st (or at least 20th) century.

    Pros

A way to put gas in your car and food on your table.

    Cons

A company stuck in a time warp. Technology is handicapping this company. Younger individuals will struggle in any role because the technology and management decisions will prevent you from doing your job. Educators and agents complain frequently. Co workers in the Springfield building are running for the doors. Any five star ratings are done by somebody in management trying to make the company look good. It's really in shambles and they know it. The sad faces that you see as you walk through the cubicles will tell the story. Run for you r lives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A complete transformation is what this company needs right now. Not yesterday. Leaders lack leadership. It's time to get bought out or just leave the insurance business. It's too late to make incremental changes. Employees and investors deserve more.

I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good benefits and vacation time, decent salary. Beautiful building and campus, though a bit dated inside. Great new CEO with an exciting vision for the future.

    Cons

Jaded and aging culture. Disjointed communication between divisions makes it seem like productivity can be an uphill battle. Transition period has made everyone on edge, making the environment less than pleasurable to be a part of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase (human) interaction between divisions. Adopt less "corporate" attributes and be a bit more employee-centric. As with many companies, certain managers are clouded by their ambition and chase away talent.

    Pros

There are plenty of challenges to improve antiquated systems. The problem is getting some backing to make a difference.

    Cons

There are team leads and long term employees that have a "voice" in decision making. Sadly, it is usually in the wrong direction. Long term employees can be good but they only know the HM way.

Managers don't seem to understand IT or management. Many spend their days in meetings to appear like they are doing something. None seem to know how to make a decision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be a complete changing of the guard. Look at how many managers have stepped down or left. That should be an indicator.

    Pros

Rapidly-changing tech environment that is implementing many new products. Very strong leadership that is actively changing the corporate environment in order to compete with larger companies. Massive upward mobility opportunities at the HQ.

    Cons

Can be frustrating learning to cope with a rapidly-changing environment, which can often lead to feeling "micro-managed". Some elements of the company feel outdated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep pressing forward with the progress, as the frustration will soon give way to an environment of top-notch professional employees.
