    Great work environment

I have been working at Horizon Lines

    Pros

This is probably one of the best teams I have worked with. Upper management is very supportive and there are great opportunities to grow within the company.

    Cons

The company is not very stable financially and will most likely be bought out by another carrier.

I have been working at Horizon Lines as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Some remote work allowed depending on supervisor.

    Cons

All Software Development is long-term contractor. Benefits are thru your contracting agency (if at all)
    - Recently announced company will most likely be split up and sold next year pending DOJ approval.
    - For an open work-space office environment - (low cube walls) - very little active team inter-action. I thought that was what the open environment was all about - instead its all emails and chat; possibly because of the array of cultures in the IT environment in the office.

I have been working at Horizon Lines

    Pros

First time in years one trade lane is earning a bonus

    Cons

Huge pay disparities depending on location, with the lowest pay in the most expensive places to live. This has the embarrassing effect of the lowest pay where the fewest Caucasians work, and the highest pay where the most Caucasians work. I don't believe they intend to be racist, but in fact, comparing exactly the same job in different locations, white people get paid more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to plan ahead. The company jumps from one bad idea to another without thinking, and wastes money on them before suddenly moving on to the next idea.
Communication. Everything here is a secret.

    Pros

Actually fair base pay and benefits, forget about training as it doesn't exist.

    Cons

Good old boy culture. If you are a member of the group, management can bend the rules in any manner, if not you had better move on.

    Pros

I have a job, proud of that. Medical Benefits are the best ever.

    Cons

Raping Salaries Employees with minimal time off. Office Drama. Disrespect. The Job is a Blast. It's the people, Management, that make working for Horizon Lines so challenging. NEPOTISM. Favoritism. It's grown-up daycare.
