    Perks with some serious downsides

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Duluth, GA

ProsGreat vacation and PTO policies, friendly co-workers, great location that is convenient to the highway are some of the perks. Management is mostly hands-off so this is a good organization for a self-motivated worker. Office culture varies among departments. Implementation is fairly loose with a good balance of daily laughs along with serious, heads-down work. It's a public company with a small privately owned feeling for the most part.

ConsSome of the downsides include silo'd departments that dont always work well together which cause havoc for the implementations. The compensation varies widely for the same job title and isn't necessarily dependent on experience or workload. Morale in the company as a whole is moderately high, however it is low for the implementation team. The workload is extremely disproportionate to employees in the rest of the company. In order to manage projects and keep up with the requirements of the position often requires working through lunch through the year, and overtime work in peak seasons. Promotions within the department aren't available and career growth is up to the employee.

    Great company on the move

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsOutstanding people with a really great company culture. Senior leadership really cares about their employees and makes every effort to help them succeed. Last couple years have seen very strong growth. Cool new applications on the Horizon. Financially sound company with good customer service.

ConsK12 is their primary market which can be a challenging market.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep hiring the best and brightest and unleash them to help grow the company even further. The migration to the web and cloud services should continue to be #1 priority.

    7) Lack of promotional options
    8) Senior staff lacks the willingness to help
    9) Competition environment yet no true basis for results
    10) Managers that dress like bums

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvice to the CEO, develop a culture for your employees that rewards for excellence not numbers. Your lower managers are fudging numbers to reap big bonuses. If you double check the numbers many are duplicates. Have you ever heard of dress for success? Many of your managers dress to take out the trash and come into work complaining about how the overtime takes them away from their families.
Incorporate team building, training and metrics that dig deep into the numbers. Current recognition strategy is flawed.
Last but not least TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN!!

Horizon is a really good employer overall.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Duluth, GA

ProsThe people at Horizon are some of the hardest-working, dedicated people found anywhere. It is extremely rewarding to be part of a team that is passionate about what they do, with excellent service to customers their #1 goal. Pay is fair, and great performance is rewarded. The company culture is good, with approachable senior management, and with most managers understanding of a work/life balance. The office is upscale and a comfortable environment to work in, and being outside of Atlanta is nice for traffic reasons. They have a casual dress code - I can wear jeans every day in the office.

ConsMedical insurance is very expensive. Some employees are spread too thin, given more responsibility than is reasonable. Opportunities to move up to management are less than ideal, and not all employees in management positions are qualified or effective managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at ways to lower medical insurance premiums for employees. Some companies offer "pick your benefits" options. Maybe some employees would give up company-covered life insurance or dental insurance in order to lower their medical insurance premiums. Also, seriously evaluate the employees you put in management positions to make sure they are the right people and have the right training to do the job you entrust them with.

    Stifling

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Duluth, GA

ProsMany opportunities to interact with enormous network of customers.
Exposure to large-scale, distributed database systems.
Diverse workforce makes for an interesting environment.

ConsSupport team largely unqualified and underpaid.
Support department focuses too much on quantitative measures and not enough on qualitative measures of success.
    Development department lacks focus.
    Interdepartmental politicking prevents progress.
    Lack of agility and responsiveness.

Advice to Senior ManagementHold developers to a higher standard.
Don't expect to have happy customers when people supporting them are untrained and unprepared to actually solve problems.

    Very dissatisfied with my experience

.NET Developer (Former Employee) Duluth, GA

ProsThe product that they sell is very well thought out and is of high quality.

ConsZero chances of telecommuting unless you have worked there more than ten years and are deemed "effective".

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider a telecommute option.

    Horizon Software has GREAT PEOPLE!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI don't believe that there is a current or former employee of Horizon that would not agree that Horizon has GREAT PEOPLE. It's easy to love what you do when you work with such a great team!

ConsChange is inevitable when going from a private to a public company. If you are someone that can embrace change and move forward.. then you are more than likely one of the many tenured employees at Horizon!

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to evolve by embracing the demands of the current working generations needs. Hire the best and the brightest and evaluate them striclty on performance without micro-managing. Make sure your middle management team is flexilble yet intolerant of slackers. Loyalty lies within the relationship between the employee and their direct manager.

    Ok but lack of innovation

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsIf you end up under the right manager, you will be sheltered from the craziness.

ConsThe company is afraid of change while the market place is changing every day. Employees are over worked and under appreciated.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo beyond your comfort zone and take on some changes.

This Company is a Mess with no Direction

    Sales (Current Employee) Duluth, GA

ProsHealth benefits and salary. The company holds a Christmas buffet and they celebrate company wide birthdays with a cake once a month. Easy to stay off the map and collect a check. If you are a sales person that works for commission this is not the place for you.

    Cons- Terrible management.
    - No career growth
    - No metrics, no structure and no guidance.
-No training as to how to demonstrate the software you will be required to sell.
-The customers that use this software are for the most part unsatisfied.
    - Commission is flaky and changes often.
-The turnover is beyond belief. Managers/coworkers will come and go.
-Outdated software. This company is at least five years behind with some of its product.
    -Unprofessional/unethical in may areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up. Maybe show a little life to your staff. I would suggest being transparent/consistent with commission and metrics. Find a way to create a more lively work environment. Treat everyone with respect and be more professional in your decisions.
