    Pros

The organization is financially stable and has a good reputation in the community. Hospices in general have good reputations in the community.

    Cons

They have forgotten why they are in business. Leaders are more concerned with getting bigger than with the level of care that is involved. Because they have a lot of money, they spend it stupidly and wastefully. Time off is difficult to get, training is last minute and everything is about getting more patients and "beating Vitas". This feels unprofessional.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Gt back in touch with the mission of the organization, forget about getting bigger until it happens because of the excellent care. Stop knocking down the other hospices in the area. That doesn't help anyone.

    Pros

working with the patients and families is very rewarding

    Cons

Management reward themselves handsomely while cutting the regular employees. They are not honest and will say anything to obtain their objectives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All of your good people are leaving. You will be soon be left with only the puppets. You continue to cut back on the benefits and capping the salaries of employees while you are giving the chosen few Lexus and hefty raises. This is supposed to be a not for profit compassionate organization. You have lost your way.

    Pros

Good clinical team, pretty good benefits, pretty good way of treating people. Compared to other companies, I was pretty happy.

    Cons

Not enough employees to do the work - need to hire more. Hospice is the type of work where you need to have time to recharge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to hire more people. It's been a hiring freeze that's gone on too long.

    Pros

Employees are great and truly care about the patients and families. CEO is always forward looking for new ways to expand, which leads to the cons...see below.

    Cons

They created many new positions for upper management and placed a hiring freeze for front-line workers and those that take care of the patients. Good, long-time employees are leaving the company on a daily basis because the stress is just too much and the expectations are high with little resources to do the job that needs to be done to care for the patients and families. Now that the hiring freeze has been lifted, those that are left are still without adequate staffing. Terrible work/life balance with little flexibility. Do not apply here if you are looking for a slow-paced job. They will push you until there is nothing left to give.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes. Your staff is leaving in droves. Morale is at an all time low. Hire more front-line workers and get rid of your some of your management. Only then will you see your beloved census rise to where you want it to be.

    Pros

Hands on staff really do care about the patients and they are trying to become more efficient with an electronic medical record. There are many long term dedicated clinical staff. If you do not mind working very hard and can work with just the patients and families and have little involvement with leadership this can be a rewarding place to work.

    Cons

Leadership is mostly absent or has pet projects the enhance the ego. Leadership delegates almost everything and gets involved in nothing. If something does not go just right there is negative feedback before finding out what actually occurred. There is a culture of fear and people are really afraid to state the truth or make a mistake. Select inexperienced people to be supervisors then do not really help them become leaders. Monthly journal clubs do not make leaders. Leadership has pet favorites and they can do no wrong-even if they do . A highly political environment. Executive team with special benefits and bonuses while cutting staff, decreasing 401 K contributions and raises. Puts a "we care" face to the community but the focus is on money and rewarding the executives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes senior leaders need to get in the trenches. The absolute lack of detailed involvement in major projects causes delays and unnecessary stress. Leaders cannot delegate and push off all the work on the underlings. EMR is an example of this. If you are only going to surround yourself with people that complement you and make you feel good at least hide it so everyone is not aware. Do something about the culture of fear, it extends beyond the leadership team and into the rank and file.

    Pros

Flexible hours, filed work not confined to an office.

    Cons

It is Hard to get paid time off approved even in advance and particularly during major holidays. Too much feedback when things go wrong, not enough acknowledgement for a job well done!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure a way to allow staff to have the time off they want and deserve. Salaries should be adjusted to reflect the work performed instead of standard 3% increase.
