I have been working at Hospira full-time for more than a year

    Pros

People are overall nice an want to do the right thing. Management is attempting to make it a fun work environment and reward with free lunch.

    Cons

Only 2 weeks of vacation! And 40 hours of sick time! Some people work 12 hr shifts, so they blow through sick time very fast!!! Other benefits are ok. Salary is lower than most, and they seem to hire a lot of non engineers for engineering positions maybe to pay less, but they don't have the right skill set. Operators are not treated well and they often have great improvement ideas but don't get heard. Manufacturing manager is very condescending when speaking with people. Employee retention is horrible. Most don't stay for even a year, many not even 6 months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and value what they say, need more sick time as well as vacation. Tell management to treat people with more respect and stop talking down to them.

    Negative stressful environment

I have been working at Hospira

    Pros

People are overall pretty friendly and want to do the right thing. They are trying their best to reward their employees with fun activities and free lunch on occasion.

    Cons

You only start with a 2 week vacation! Other benefits are ok, but salary is lower than most. They hire many non-engineers for engineer positions in order to pay them less, but they dont have the right set of skills that engineers do. Operators are not treated well at all and they often have good ideas but no one will listen to them. Manufacturing manager is very condescending when speaking to people. Employee retention is horrible many don't even stay for 1 year. They constantly try to operate with the minimum number of operators and people keep making mistakes because they are trying to run a few different areas. Overall not a very positive work environment. Everyone seems to be complaining about work or talking about finding a new job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees ideas, and reward them for a job well done and hire more people in doc control. 2 weeks of vacation is ridiculous, push for 3!

I worked at Hospira full-time for less than a year

    Pros

401(k) match and immediacy of vesting.

    Cons

You don't get what they sell you at corporate when you work at a site - completely different experiences between location of where you work and all the corporate branding stuff they pitch. Mediocrity is the norm (which is why compensation is not market value) - so if you are a C player, you'll fit here...if you're a high performer, don't apply - you'll be frustrated and leave. If you do perform higher, you are making up for the lack of all the other people on your team pulling their weight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Culture is one of CYA. Not doing things ethically and consistently will catch up to you some day.

Company leadership makes poor decisions in developing new product lines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Hospira full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I personally learnt a lot at Hospira. It was a new industry, a new role. The challenges in the new role were huge but so were the rewards. The medical industry has many quirks that I was unfamiliar with and Hospira helped me widen my perspective. Working on technology that could impact lives positively was a great feeling

    Cons

Much slower paced than other industries such as telecom etc. Lot of red-tape said to be for product safety but was due to inter-disciplinary interference where a person who knew nothing of software would make a comment that would delay software development indefinitely.

    Pros

Strong brand name in healthcare industry, decent pay.

    Cons

Terrible, incompetent management team. Systemic quality problems, lack of profitability and overall lack of vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Divest and liquidate every possible division and product line before the company implodes.

I worked at Hospira as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Income with lots of overtime, training in different test methods

    Cons

Too much testing to get completed per shift, long hours, no peer or management back-up

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Competitive pay for lab personel to keep well-trained workers, reasonable work load, work on improving workers not replacing them

Former Employee - Supervisor in Austin, TX

I worked at Hospira full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The people working there are hard working and friendly. Some of the best relationships I have were from this organization. A benefit of being "in the trenches" with them.

    Cons

Poor management clueless on the morale and concerns from the manufacturing floor. No collaboration between qualify and manufacturing...very much "Us vs. Them" mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Culture is something that takes time to develop, not beat into your employees. This place is not the pinnacle of employment so do away with the "no re-hire" policy.

Current Employee - Calibration Supervisor in Austin, TX

I have been working at Hospira full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They are trying to change their culture and progress the company to be more competitive. Site investment and commitment has increased as well as a renewed drive to do things right the first time

    Cons

Benefits still lag compared to the rest of the industry. Procedures to improve actually keep improvements from happening...they have proceduralized themselves into a hole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to the SMEs and their knowledge of industry standards and procedures.
