customer service taking a backseat to profit these days, employees take the brunt of the fallout

    Administrative (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

    Pros-Five minute massages
-Decent vacation time (don't get sick or bye bye vacation time!)
    -Health insurance
    -Christmas bonus (for now)
    -Flexible schedule

ConsThe Hostgator division is quickly going downhill with low pay, people leaving for higher paying jobs as the economy gets better and the good ole boy Texas bro-ligarchy running everything, handing out raises and promotions to the people they like. If you're a woman wanting to work here, this place is anathema to a promotion that will never happen, so look elsewhere and save yourself the trouble, or work in HR. They hold these town hall meetings, fly in the bigwigs from wherever, promise big changes ...two months later and counting, no change other than more work, nothing in terms of the promised bonus restructure, they even took down the forum queries they said would be back up, ahem, shortly. So of course that means no questioning as to anything discussed in that meeting, out of sight out of mind

Advice to Senior ManagementEverything here is about quota and we get it but stop being so cheap, or at least stop trying to make your employees believe management cares and that there's' transparency, it's annoying and that's a restrained description.

ProsThe opportunity Host Gator provides in the webhosting community is awesome. You can know almost nothing, and get a great chance to learn about a ton of stuff, in both linux, and customer service, so it's a good place to build a resume.

ConsManagement does not care, and it's a negative place to be. The product they provide is a joke, and every change since EIG bought them out was for the worse. Pay is low, and not consistent among employees, promotions are weighed down by pointless bureaucracy and the work is monotonous and stressful. If you become good at your job you're only met with roadblocks and wasted time. Kills the spirit of people who care.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo something to make it feel like anyone cares about something other than money. All the nice things they do are meaningless when you can't get anywhere.

Good starting place for people wanting to get into Linux

    Migrations Administrator I (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsThe regular employees are the best part of the company. They try and keep people with the Free Beer Fridays and free food. Benefits are OK and they are fairly flexible with your work schedule.

ConsLots of layoffs and cutting back on on internal promotions since the company was bought out by AIG.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry paying better and promoting people that deserve it, not because of the group they hang out with.

ProsAwesome video game room with free games.

ConsExpected to take 5 chats at once when new and most people don't last.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more people and pay more so new people don't have to take care of 5 chats at once.

ProsBenefits and compensation provide for a sustainable living. If you like to geek out on Linux and web technology then you'll forgive some of the cons. There are a lot of interesting people that work there.

ConsYou'll be given a tight quota that is priority over helping customers. You'll get a lot of frustrated customers. There were a lot of interesting people that worked there.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop penalizing staff because of failing infrastructure.

A series of ups and downs.

    Linux Systems Administrator (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

    Pros-A lot of learning opportunities
    -Flexible scheduling around school
    -Great co-workers
-Free food that is actually half-way past decent
    -Nice new office
    -Comfy chairs

Cons-New owner, EIG, cut costs to increase profit at the price of the product the company offers, plain and simple. Unfortunately HostGator front line-support is forced to deal with the fallout and the company's reputation has spiraled as a result.
-Compensation for admins is no where near industry standard.
-Understaffed after EIG cleaned house ("re-structured").
-Parking situation is a bad joke.
-The relaxed workplace might be too relaxed. The lack of professionalism can get tiring.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you lay off as many people as you did you should probably give some raises out afterwards. Re-evaluate the true "savings" earned by having anything in Provo at all. Consider offering OT again to get support volume under control.

Focus on fixing the reputation of the company. While you're doing that, stop having sales that only increase the enormous ticket wait times. Sales help short-term profits but do nothing when everyone cancels after a month.

    No Morals

    Chat Tech I (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsThe best reason to work there would be the fact that they had a massage team come out and massage you every Monday.

ConsThe people have no respect for others, no one greets each other, no one showers on a regular basis, they're all fat, etc. There is NO opportunity for growth here unless you fit into some 1% radius of some mere chance that the CEO/Directors will take a liking to you.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive everyone a raise to avoid high turn over, encourage clean, healthy lifestyle, etc.

    HG grows up!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsHG has continued to grow up over the last year. They've got new offices, better setups, better hardware seems to be replacing everything. I'm very impressed with how much the company has grown up and happy I stuck around!

ConsThe new gym equipment hasn't gotten here yet, it's been kind of a bummer! But they're working to get that setup.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep people informed about amenities and when they'll get here!

ProsFree beer and wine. Plenty of things to learn. Coworkers are friendly. The free back massage once a week were nice.

ConsEmphasis on quantity over quality. High turnover. Low pay rates.

Advice to Senior ManagementNever push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care.
