    Pros

The People! Great product! Travel Benefits! Outstanding Senior Management! Beautiful new space!

    Cons

It runs a bit lean on the employees so it would be better if they hired more people. Some of the beaurocratic stuff that comes down from Expedia can be annoying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Hotwire

    Pros

Hotwire's focus on work life balance is phenomenal. Employees often pick their own hours, and can set up regular (or last minute) work from home days. As a travel company, time off is a standard benefit. Hotwire is mid-sized, but has all the benefits of a large company (we're owned by Expedia) like phenomenal and a-typical benefits: free gym membership, free child care (20 days/year), stocks (not options, but straight stock), huge bonuses every year, and lots of non-work days (company events, department events, team events). Hotwire also just moved in to brand new offices (in the financial district of SF) so the office is clean, spacious, and well-stocked. Our end-of-year gift this year was an Ipod Touch. They do a pretty good job of taking care of us. Another great aspect of Hotwire is that the release schedule is "just right". Some companies have very rushed releases with no cool-down, and so employees are pulling late-nighters. Other companies have 6 or 12 month release schedules, so you rarely see the benefits of your work. Hotwire has major releases every month, and employees contribute to most releases (depending on the depth of your involvement in a project), so you see your work, live, often enough to feel like you are contributing. But when releases happen, it doesn't affect your life - you work the same hours, go home on time, no added stress.

    Cons

Hotwire has very few downsides. We're a small portion of the larger parent company, so sometimes it's hard to see how the company's successes affect the stock price. Luckily, bonuses and evaluations are based on Hotwire's successes, and not Expedia, Inc's. Another downside is gas prices are squeezing the travel industry. Luckily, online travel is still the second largest industry online and Expedia is the #1 company in that industry, so there's no worry about job loss. Also, since Hotwire is the "discount" wing of Expedia, the economic downturn benefits Hotwire, and that shows in our bonuses.

Bring back the Memphis Mini's BBQ lunches (and supplement for the vegetarians). It seems like all we get now is pizza.

I have been working at Hotwire

    Pros

The health, wellness, vacation, and travel benefits are outstanding. The work environment is great. The small company atmosphere is engaging and low stress. The Financial District office location is convenient especially if you can commute via MUNI, BART, or Cal Train.

    Cons

The new office is a farther walk from BART and Cal Train. The new hire training could be more formalized, consistent, and indepth - certain departments are good about ramping up new people, while others lag and let people fend for themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Same feedback most companies can improve upon: Senior Management should meet one on one with front line employees and listen to their ideas about how to improve the business. Vocalize and communicate a vision for the company and each department. Listen to your people and act upon their feedback.

    Pros

Small, scrappy company....good people, good environment. Good product.

    Cons

For some, the downtown SFO location is a bit of a commute but who can really complain about working in downtown San Francisco?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing; remember that communication is key and knowledge is power and an empowered employee is, generally, a productive and happy employee.

I have been working at Hotwire full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing work/life balance, great benefits and travel perks, on-site gym, smart and nice people, great office/location...the new president is extremely insightful/smart and has a clear vision on the direction he wants to take the company.

    Cons

Often too conservative and not willing to take risks (this is changing), growth opportunities are limited, compensation is lower than competitors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the clear vision and transparency. However, need to boost moral and inject more fun into the culture in order to get the company back to its roots. Employees/talent afraid to join the company or stay due to negative opinions circulating, this is changing, but really need to highlight the benefits of the company and it's strong brand.
