    Pros

The best thing about Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is the people that work there. It is very relaxed yet very professional.

    Cons

Senior management feels the best way to improve profits is to lay off workers and often times their best workers, so there is always an air of instability and job insecurity among those who are still employed. Raises are non-existant.

    Advice to Management

Find other ways to improve profit other than lay offs. Lay offs effect everyone.

    Pros

Good compensation, great work environment. This is a workplace where I felt like my work made a difference for many people.

    Cons

Not a lot of job security for someone in the lower ranks, but this seems to be the way of the publishing world nowadays.

    Pros

The leaders have a clear vision of where the company should go, explain it well, and have the drive and abiility to get it done.

    Cons

Some mid-level executives are resisting the move to digital but that will soon pass.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the future, show us the way, and don't be distracted by the naysayers.

    Pros

I started working here during the O'Callahan administration and times were troubled. Once O'Callahan was replaced by current CEO, Linda Zecher, there's been a huge push toward improving company culture, stabilizing salaries and offering employee training. I've taken three free training seminars in the last 2 years and it's improved various skill sets. I have a supportive manager and I enjoy my team and co-workers. Flexible hours are a pro, as are Summer Fridays.

    Cons

If you give us free coffee, we will work harder, faster, better...

    Advice to Management

Please support the free coffee movement.

    - the people - the purpose / mission of the Company (something special about being involved in education) - excellent products - customers are huge fans

    Cons

-Great, friendly people. The people make this company a place to look forward to everyday. : ) -Benefits are decent, including AETNA medical, Guardian dental & vision, Lincoln Life & AD&D, 401k with co. matching, employee appreciation events, etc. -laid back environment, flexible schedule depending on personal appointments, no formal dress code -management is approachable and down-to-earth,; egos left at the door

    Cons

-Human resources are tight so many employees are handling a lot of different jobs -Company is start-up in environment so we are still a growing company who has a long ways to becoming more established

    Advice to Management

-When we become successful, tenured employees and worker bees should definitely be the first in line to be appreciated.

    Pros

Simply put I have never worked with better people. I get to work from home and I love it! I have never worked anywhere that I have gotten so much recognition for the hard work I do. Everyday I am thankful for the people I get to work with and the environment at HMH is very collaborative.

    Cons

It would be nice to make a little more but hey nothing is perfect! There are some people who need a little attitude adjustment.
