If you stay within FAS as an analyst for more than 1 year, your career track will become stagnant

Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
Century City, CA

I have been working at Houlihan Lokey full-time for more than a year

ProsQuite honestly, this job provides a pretty good stepping stone to get into investment banking (M&A or industry coverage). Generally, the people are very nice in FAS (at least in the LA office) and the group provides pretty good work/life balance.

ConsOverall, compensation is pretty poor for FAS. Also, exit opportunities become very bleak if you stay longer than 1 year.

Great experience

Investment Banking Analyst (Current Employee)
Dallas, TX

I have been working at Houlihan Lokey as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat people. They were not only smart but also fun to work with. I worked in the FAS group as an analyst intern and had a great experience. The only reason I didn't return was because of the location, yet my MD still wrote me a great recommendation letter and helped me get my current job.

ConsThe hours were long and you can never really know when you'll have to work late or come in on the weekends. But that's pretty standard in this line of work.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep on keepin' on.

Work Hard, Play Hard

Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Houlihan Lokey full-time for more than 3 years

ProsHoulihan is a great place to start or continue your career. It is continually growing and has a great entrepreneurial culture. As a finance professional, you will work incredibly hard, but you will also have the opportunity to learn about and help companies in numerous industries. The people were the reason why I joined Houlihan over other companies and it was the reason I stayed there until going back to school.

ConsBe prepared to work hard and challenge yourself. There will be nights that you don't go home and weeks where you do not see your family. That's the nature of the business. Know yourself and what you are looking for career wise before accepting an offer.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore compensation transparency and more morale building activities.

Poor.

Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Houlihan Lokey

ProsSmall deal teams.
Model experience for analyst, not just pitchbooks.
No one really watching analyst intil it's too late.

Cons"Expendible" attitude with analysts.
Some teams only have one analyst so your always slammed with work.
Low pay:work ratio.

Advice to Senior ManagementBeware of how Associates, Directors and VP's treat the Analysts. The team is only as strong as its weakest link.

Love the experience at HLHZ; not as fond of the senior/officer level management

Investment Banking Analyst (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Houlihan Lokey

ProsI worked at another investment bank, prior to working at Houlihan Lokey, and I found myself pleasantly surprised. The work culture at HLHZ was alot more collegial and friendly, then at my prior experience; also, the caliber of my peer group was significantly higher, just in terms of analytical adeptness and general understanding of finance. The projects were very interesting; HLHZ is a top shop, in terms of its restructuring and M&A client list, so I was able to work on exciting engagements. Also, deal teams are very lean. All things considered, I am very happy to have finished my analyst career at Houlihan Lokey.

ConsAlthough my peer group was very impressive in caliber, I was very unimpressed with MDs and VPs, not so much in their attitude towards work, but with their intelligence and general ability to grasp deal points, manage expectations with clients, and get a quick understanding of an engagement. It almost seemed as if there was a disproportionate of both analysis and check placed on the Analysts and Associates on a given deal team. This made for a good experience, personally; however, deals were often executed in a sub-optimal fashion due to this senior level incompetence. I am not sure why this is; it is not an indication of everyone. Out of 5 MDs and 7 or 8 VPs I worked with on a regular basis, probably 2 MDs and 4 VPs fit this mold, of generally being just terribly inefficient and unable to keep up with the quantitative/analytical intricacies of a deal process. Also, the pay is not tied to bank performance, it is tied to street performance, although this is standard at the junior level.

Advice to Senior Management1) Review finance 101, 2) Review management 101; learn finance, and learn to manage clients. Or ask your analysts/associates to do it for you, they are by and large significantly better educated, and tend to be far more competent.

Good experience with talented people but restructuring rules the roost--lots of politics

Associate (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at Houlihan Lokey full-time for more than a year

ProsCollegial environment
Work hard play hard attitude
Significant responsibility and client interaction

ConsConstant infighting with over fee splits with other teams
Financial Advisory Services is the trash can of the company
No service offering in FAS just randomly shooting at whatever moves

Advice to Senior ManagementGet some new blood into upper level management and accelerate a move to an industry model which will help improve the us versus them mentality between the various groups: FRG, CF and FAS
