I have been working at Houlihan Lokey full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I know what's expected of me from my team and management. Allowed a great deal of autonomy to complete my work the way I want to so long as the results are timely and according to expectations. Good company events (in-office breakfasts, off-site happy hour, parties, etc). My department has a great energy.

    Cons

There are obvious issues with hostility and poor management in other departments. Corporate tends to be laissez-faire when they should take a more interested approach to managing their many offices around the country. Promotions tend to be illogical and not merit-based.

    Pros

Great place to start your career and learn finance. Met some of the smartest people I know at this firm. Strong reputation.

    Cons

Typical of IB. Long hours - seemed excessive/unnecessary at times. Hours seemed longer than they were for friends at other IBs

I worked at Houlihan Lokey full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - industry leader in creditor-side restructurings
    - good opportunities to get promoted to mid-level
    - decent pay considering better work-life balance in LA vs NY

    Cons

    - limited exit opportunities given lack of brand recognition (restructuring analysts tend to get hired by credit hedge funds, but tough to break into PE, VC, and equity HF)
    - some tough characters to work for

    Neutral Outlook

If you stay within FAS as an analyst for more than 1 year, your career track will become stagnant

I have been working at Houlihan Lokey full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Quite honestly, this job provides a pretty good stepping stone to get into investment banking (M&A or industry coverage). Generally, the people are very nice in FAS (at least in the LA office) and the group provides pretty good work/life balance.

    Cons

Overall, compensation is pretty poor for FAS. Also, exit opportunities become very bleak if you stay longer than 1 year.

I have been working at Houlihan Lokey as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great people. They were not only smart but also fun to work with. I worked in the FAS group as an analyst intern and had a great experience. The only reason I didn't return was because of the location, yet my MD still wrote me a great recommendation letter and helped me get my current job.

    Cons

The hours were long and you can never really know when you'll have to work late or come in on the weekends. But that's pretty standard in this line of work.

I worked at Houlihan Lokey full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Houlihan is a great place to start or continue your career. It is continually growing and has a great entrepreneurial culture. As a finance professional, you will work incredibly hard, but you will also have the opportunity to learn about and help companies in numerous industries. The people were the reason why I joined Houlihan over other companies and it was the reason I stayed there until going back to school.

    Cons

Be prepared to work hard and challenge yourself. There will be nights that you don't go home and weeks where you do not see your family. That's the nature of the business. Know yourself and what you are looking for career wise before accepting an offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More compensation transparency and more morale building activities.

    Pros

Upper management gives you confidence the firm is headed in a good direction
Some level of appreciation for employees is shown

Visible gap between treatment of financial and corporate staff
    Cost conscious to a fault

    I worked at Houlihan Lokey

    Pros

    Small deal teams.
Model experience for analyst, not just pitchbooks.
No one really watching analyst intil it's too late.

    Cons

    "Expendible" attitude with analysts.
Some teams only have one analyst so your always slammed with work.
    Low pay:work ratio.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Beware of how Associates, Directors and VP's treat the Analysts. The team is only as strong as its weakest link.
