    Pros

Fun, upbeat and constantly changing environment with the chance to meet many different types of people. Pretty flexible regarding needed time-off.

    Cons

Pressure of making goal and getting everything done with only so many staff. HIGHLY depend on volunteers who do not always show.

I worked at Housing Works full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If your mission is to help people you get the chance to do that here. Clients do show their gratitude for your help even when management might be too busy to do that. The team work was fun and you learn a lot from other disciplines.
Overall atmosphere is laid back and HR is supportive.

    Cons

Changes in programming and financial strains cause disorganization and there were many rounds of lay offs. Lack of staff often puts extra demands on the team. At times, leadership was lacking. Clients deal with real issues, so you better be ready for that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more aware of the emotional drain of the job and provide more guidance and time off to avoid burn out among staff.

Most of the executive management were all failures at their previous jobs and come to Housing Works to prove a they aren't. They expect growth without doing anything different or new.

A great mission and community but be ready for intense, sometimes unsupported goals.

    Pros

Great mission, interaction with community you serve and decent benefits. If you are an independent personality that likes to be creative you may see some success.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be difficult in leadership positions, high turnover rates of employees and rash decision making can make things seem out of control.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay closer attention to personal development of successful employees that will in turn help you grow and reduce high turnover rates.

I have been working at Housing Works

    Pros

Helping out the HIV/AIDS clients was rewarding, as well as the creativity of the marketing department.

    Cons

Very low pay, as expected of a nonprofit. Manager who was bad at managing people and gave extra work that didn't contribute to any reasonable end goal or result.

I have been working at Housing Works full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Wonderful, supportive HR staff
    Great benefits
    Diverse Staff
Everybody is relaxed and real, people are working toward great goals and trying to have fun while doing it
not a fake, stubborn, overly formal environment- I love it!

    Cons

Lack of growth and development-it's pretty much impossible to be promoted and move up
Insecure office-things get stolen all the time
    Low morale

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more money into HR staff, it is horrible to watch these people burned out like that. It does not seem like senior staff understands the importance of HR. And maybe, if they had more people in that department, they could fix the problem I mentioned?
