HCC - a great place to teach

Professor (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Houston Community College full-time for more than 3 years

Pros1. The work is rewarding
2. The people are easy to work with
3. The pay is okay.
4. The hours are great

ConsGreat place to teach - No idea what administrative jobs are like.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdministrative functions should operate with a greater sense of urgency.

My experience at HCC was rewarding during my transitional period.

Test Proctor (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Houston Community College part-time for more than 5 years

ProsWorking here will allow you to interact with people of many different cultures and backgrounds. The hours are very flexible for the Test Proctor position.

ConsThere was a policy in place that would not allow part time workers in the Testing Department to work 20 hours per week. The maximum amount of hours allowed per week was 19.5.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow part time workers to work 20 hours per week, instead of 19.5. That extra half hour opens up government assistance, such as SNAP, that may be needed, especially by a college student.

Great environment but

Hardware Tech (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Houston Community College full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat environment, hours, benefits are not bad, and plenty of time off.

ConsNo chance to advance, under pay, under utilize your skills, no bonus, politics, and employees have not voice.

Advice to Senior ManagementI wish they would adjust pay based on education that employees acquire while employed at HCC.

More political than a presidential election;

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

ConsThe opportunities change with the constantly changing management.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the political agenda and support previous management when it becomes your department.

Overall bad experience working as an adjunct

Adjunct Faculty (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at Houston Community College part-time for more than a year

Prosyou can gain college-level teaching experience

Cons-there were several times where I waited weeks/months after the pay date to get paid
-I would be asked by my boss to teach/prep courses in another department, then that department's chair would call/email me angry that I was prepping courses in his/her department without her knowledge
-it is easier to get a teaching job at a university than it is at HCC; they expect way too much just to become eligible or qualified
-I was told to get a syllabus from another instructor to use as a guide, but when I asked for this, the instructor reported me and then I was reprimanded

Good institution, poor management. Much upside possible

Business Development (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at Houston Community College full-time for less than a year

ProsSocially responsible and good for the community. Some excellent professional tied up in a web of mediocrity. There is room to contribute if you follow the guidelines. If not you can be stuck in red tape.

ConsManagement is political and very siloed. People think ' me first and getting ahead'. Heard many times "don't speak up" ... other times heard " They treat us like **it" ... "If you want to get ahead, leave!"..."one top manager said, 'i know its wrong, but its the process' ...(can you believe that happening in a private institution?) ... it became unbearable to be in a no man's land where you could not change the system and you could not do what you needed to do because of it. Much inbreeding and people protected each other if they were old school buddies, especially the old timers from the 90's covered each others back no matter how incompetent or Peter Principled they had become.

Be good but don't make waves!

Confidential (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at Houston Community College full-time for more than a year

ProsGood family atmosphere...strong level of social commitment and good diversity in workforce

ConsBureaucratic, filled with friends of managers who are trained to say yes. Controversial opinions are shunned and mediocrities advance if they say yes...people shut up rather than incur the wrath of administration: "Don't open your mouth" is heard often (and I did hear it)

Advice to Senior ManagementDecide if you really want to be an excellent institution or just another mediocre state funded bureaucracy. Excellence does not come in bits and bytes, but is a total package. You must commit to excellence in all areas and allow diverse opinions to rock the boat.
