I worked at Houston Community College part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Patrick, the lab manager, is really reasonable and flexible with the hours for employee. The pay is pretty good.

    Cons

Pretty much none, it was reasonable dealing with network, pc problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mr. Patrick Teoh is a really nice manager, but sometimes he is so nice that a few employees took advantages of that.

I have been working at Houston Community College

    Pros

HCC pays adjuncts better than most other institutions in the Houston area. There are also opportunities for professional development. Adjuncts also get retirement benefits via TIAA-CREF. The diversity of students is also a big plus.

    Cons

The younger students are often unprepared for college level work. Hopefully the new entrance exam will help alleviate the problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure the entrance exam is a fair assessment of college-level aptitude and skills.

I have been working at Houston Community College full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of time off, flexible schedules, no stress, nice management

    Cons

Not many opportunities to learn new things, management doesn't communicate with lower level employees, training is non-existent

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many employees have been here for years and decades. They do not care about doing much work or helping the students. They do the minimum to get by. As a result, there are many frustrated students. Also, the work is unproportioned with some employees doing only a few hours of work per day and others being overworked.

    Pros

You are actually helping your community. Every ounce of energy you spend is worth it, because you are doing good

    Cons

The board of directors is very corrupt and self serving. The board gets elected by public votes and therefore they are politicians. Then they work to enrich their patrons. They don't have the good of the college or its students in mind.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have an independent investigative commission always on duty investigating the executive levels and the board. Have their results be published publicly. Bring criminal charges against the corrupt board members

I have been working at Houston Community College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Cool coworkers, easy to go along with. Flexible schedule for part time. Accommodated my class schedule. Every boss was good to work under.

    Cons

No advancement without a B.S.; salary for assistants is almost minimum wage. Even though I thought I did outstanding job, I was paid same as people doing very little.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize extraordinary workers and pay them more

I have been working at Houston Community College

    Pros

The opportunity to help students, the flexability of the company/managgers and the off days.

    Cons

No type of cost of living increases however raises of 2% might be given every 3-4 years. That is not enough. If apply and offered another job with the company HR does not offer $ to match. Applicant from the outside with less experience will come in making more money than a current employee with more experience and knowledge.

    Pros

The manager of the Learning Emporium is very nice.
She let me choose the working hour to fit my classes' schedule, which was pretty chaotic.

    Cons

The hiring process was pretty long and complicated as I am an international student.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am completely satisfied with the current manager.
