Very beneficial experience, great for a summer job.

    Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsGreat work environment, very friendly staff. Small class sizes were easy to handle.

ConsClass rooms were located underground, would be nicer with windows.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be nice to have training sessions before working for new workers.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Could care less about employees

    Visitor Services (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsYou definitely get to meet smart and fun people, most of my coworkers were very friendly and approachable. The environment is pretty fun, you're after all in a museum so you get to see shows, exhibits, and go to cool events. They're very flexible on your schedule and it's very easy to learn.

ConsUnprofessional and incompetent upper management. The HR department is the worst, they might as well not have one. There is definitely favoritism. They interview people for positions when they already know who they have in mind so they let you think you actually have a chance. I worked there for almost three years and yet one of the Visitor Service supervisors could not remember my name despite being a consistent top membership seller. Another one of the supervisors calls employees "its" and is completely rude and disrespectful, treats people like they're completely beneath her. There is lack of communication between departments. They keep cutting hours and not giving any raises.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou should provide further training to your VS supervisors because they have terrible people skills. If you're going to cut hours, then seriously consider giving people a raise because if you're making "record" sales than I'm sure you can budget some money in to the people that are basically the friendly faces of the museum. Show appreciation to all employees not just your favorites.

    fun job

    Visitor Services (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

Prosgreat job because of the access to the wonderful exhibits.

Consit is low pay with just above minimum wage, the museum schedule allows for only a few hours so overall no one can survive on that job alone unless they are a student that lives at home with their parents..

Advice to Senior Managementstop gossiping too much.

Worked in Box Office and did volunteer work for a couple of years

    Visitor Services (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsYou usually have a good chance of climbing the corporate ladder: the museum promotes from within. Every few months or so, you can expect to find a memo about a job opening in your employee mailbox in the breakroom, informing you of what positions are now open and how to apply.
You have a chance to make good money on commission while you work in Visitor Services, too, especially in the Box Office.
The training in VS involves doing a bit of everything: ushering in the Giant Screen Theater, selling tickets over the phone, telling visitors where to find the exhibits, checking visitors for butterfly escapees, taking ticket stubs...
You decide your own schedule at least three times a year. You pick which shifts best suit you and that are available to you, and that schedule stays in place for 3-4 months at a time.

ConsThe turnover rate can be kinda high. Customers can be awful.

    ConsThe pay isn't very high.

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat place to work! I loved my managers and how nice they were.

If you want free access to exhibits, this is the place to work part-time

    Gift Shop Cashier (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsThe free tickets to exhibits are a definite plus, so if you're a museum-type person and love to learn new things, it is worth it to work there part-time for a couple days of the week.

Consmanagement can be very moody sometimes

Advice to Senior ManagementActually listen to the feedback of employees. Some of the upper management definitely did not consider themselves as equals to the employees. There were a lot of huge heads floating around, and favoritism to certain employees. The uniforms are retarded, and there are way to many dumb rules with no room for input or suggestions from employees.
