I worked at Howard County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Other Teachers and Leadership are very supportive for behavior management issues

    Cons

School ignores contracted hours and over loads staff with unreasonable number of classes to teach, grading, planning responsibilities etc resulting in extremely long work days as well as weekend work that is not sustainable if you want any family time or life outside of school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Conduct random surveys of the work loads and working hours of staff during the first year of employment and make the collective, anonymous results public. calculate whether you are even paying the minimum wage. First year staff should be given less work loads not the same or more than experienced staff.

I worked at Howard County Public Schools full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Howard County is a great school system to work for. They have decent entry level pay with great benefits. I really enjoyed working in such a supportive work environment at my school.

    Cons

Work life balance as a teacher was quite difficult. Not enough time is given for planning lessons. Updates to certain schools are a necessity as well as making sure that teachers have access to new technology to use in the classroom. More money should be provided to teachers (especially in an elementary school) to purchase necessary items for the classroom. The new Common Core Curriculum is too rigorous for little ones yet not rigorous enough for older students. Having to prove that you are an effective teacher by writing up reports and submitting artifacts for SLO's takes away too much time from planning effective lessons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give teachers more time for planning, provide more support for 1st year teachers

I have been working at Howard County Public Schools full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with elementary school age children is very rewarding, and co-workers are consummate professionals. School leadership at my school is excellent; administration is hands-on. Benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Leadership st the BOE has changed hands in the past several years, and is somewhat contentious at this time. Salaries are decent, though several adjoining counties have better pay scales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider listening more to your teachers requests for more time and money. We don't want to lost good teachers to other school systems.

I worked at Howard County Public Schools as an intern (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Laid back environment. Friendly coworkers always willing to lend a hand. Occasional birthday parties/team building activities are a nice perk.

    Cons

Lots of noisy cubes. Building is very old and needs to be updated. At times it seems there may be animosity between different departments when they should all work together.

I have been working at Howard County Public Schools

    Pros

Very good benefits, excellent system reputation (at least in the past), good salary, committed and dedicated employees,

    Cons

overall toxic environment, no one knows what to expect or what's expected of them, most think current strategy is to 'silence' anyone who might have an idea (another opinion)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although there appears to be a plan for schools, not one person seems to have a clue what's happening in administration.... Have and communicate a vision and plan for moving forward?
