I worked at Howard Hughes Medical Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

HHMI really knows how to get research done - they take care of their employees and let science happen. Fantastic benefits and support staff really make life easy as a researcher

Funding is obviously hard to get and doesn't last forever... a funded PI might have more objections as well, but those aren't clear to researchers working further down the food chain.
