I worked at Hughes for more than 1 year

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat technology environment. Many excellent engineers. Interesting projects to work on both large and small.

ConsMultiple takeovers in last few years. Benefits and pay eroding as a result. Top heavy - many VPs and so emphasis on recruiting entry and low levels in attempt to correct and so now a hole in mid-level expertise.

    Company culture

    (Current Employee) Gaithersburg, MD

ProsPeople are friendly. Pleasant office environment. Have a nurse on site that you could make an appointment to meet for free so you can avoid paying co-pay to the doctors as well as time away from work. Plenty of parking spaces at the headquarters. There is a company store that you can purchase certain tickets (i.e. movie, park) at a discount.

ConsBenefits were good until Hughes was acquired by EchoStar. After the acquisition, benefits got downgraded. Not sure what other changes EchoStar will make in the future. Upper management do show favoritism to people who know how to butter up to them.

    No room for growth

    Accountant (Former Employee) Gaithersburg, MD

ProsSome of the most brilliant engineering minds work here. The company has a good future and stability. The culture is uncertain after acquisition by Echostar

ConsThe work environment is stale, most of the Upper Management have been in their roles for decades and are not going anywhere. The company has fallen into a comfortable lull, and after acquisition by Echostar benefits were reduced drastically

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate room for growth by allowing people to move within the organization. Be receptive to suggestions and encourage all feedback

    Used to be much better

Senior Engineer (Current Employee) Germantown, MD

ProsThere are ample opportunities for you to tinker with things in the lab. Management doesn't have a set of guidelines on how things should be done, so you have a lot of freedom to be creative, just like back in grad school. Sometimes, these new ideas lead to patentable inventions and other cool things. Also, work-life balance isn't too bad. I haven't had to work late or on weekends in at least 3 years.

ConsThe company is very top heavy. There are more managers than employees, or at least it seems. The younger engineers don't like this, because they don't get promoted, so they leave.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's time to re-balance your workforce. The company is losing too much young talent to keep this up. In a few years, all Hughes has left is management and fresh recruits. An entire generation of mid ranking engineers is gone.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
