Pros
Innovative, listens to associates and opinons. Good pay.
Cons
downsizing did not get rid of correct people, better balance of job and family
Pros
Training is good depending on the department. Dining choices are second to none in the larger offices. If you are an associate that travels on business, the daily per deim you have is better than most. The front line customer facing associates are some of the best people, I enjoyed working with them in many different locations. The products they offer to consumers are really good plans.
Good pay, good vacation policy. I thought at one time I would retire from Humana.
Cons
How can someone who has gotten excellent top notch yearly reviews, met production standards, been the star of the team be terminated? Fall out of favor with the political in-crowd for standing up for yourself and what was right. I am not a brown-noser and I refused to play the politics game and lost. HR won't investigate complaints against management and when they do it is a token investigation. It is pretty sad when your manager can't perform the job they manage, yet they get sent on leadership summits, and development trips etc. Nothing from those trips benefits the front line employees. Yet all the while on their Facebook page you see they were posting pool side at 1:00 in the afternoon on a workday when you know the conference is going on.
Your co-workers on the same level as you will talk one way (oh yeah its bad we need to work together for a change yada yada) but when it is time for a team meeting everyone is quiet out of fear of stirring the water.
The benefits for employees are not great, but in Humana's defense, most employers are cutting the benefits they offer to associates to cut costs.
When someone does bring a problem forward management tells you what they think you want to hear just to keep you quiet.
Advice to Senior Management
When a manager puts someone up for termination, look back on the employees history, their performance reviews, compliments, etc. Don't just take the managers word for it, they could have a grudge against the employee or it could be politically driven. Make sure your Front Line Leads can do the job of the people they are leading, serves no purpose to have an FLL that can't take and rectify a supervisor call. Really investigate employee complaints and at least aknowledge them.
Pros
- Depending on the department that you work in, management can be very flexible about your work arrangements (work from home, etc.)
- Family friendly envirionment
- Cheap to live in Louisville
- Suprising, great ethnic restaurants (wide range of food- indian, ethiopian, french, cuban, etc.)
- Good pay- especially if recruited from out of town
- For the most part, friendly people
Cons
- Difficult to find leadership opportunities since there is not a lot of movement amongst upper management (ex. Directors, VP). As a result, most movements are lateral.
-Do not always find the most competent people working in roles- placement very heavily dependent on who you know.
-If you are from out of town, the singles life here is disappointing. People get married and have families pretty young here (early to mid 20s).
-Small town envirionment which can seem very cliquish if you are from out of town- circles here are very dependent on the neighborhoods you grew up in and the high school (yes high schoool) that you went to, regardless of your age. The cliques spill over into the work envirionment. Hence, you do not always find the most competent people working in the various roles across the company.
- Unable to retain talent that it recruits from out of state. Those who tend to stay at the company are those who are either from Louisville or its surrounding areas, or have married someone from Louisville. if you are not from here, it can feel like you are living in a bubble.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior management needs to move on and give the chance for new thoughts and ideas to penetrate throughout the company- CEO has been there for 15+ years. the company very much depends on the mindset that its past successes will automatically detemine that of its future- health insurance is an industry that has been historically stagnant and resistant to change. Yet with the onslaught of healthcare reform and the health industry's trend to become more consumer-centric, leadership needs FRESH, CREATIVE ideas...although ideas are being created in the trenches of middle management, it is not permeating upwards. As a result, the company many times is unable to retain the great talent that it recruits from out of state.
Pros
The co-workers are great people
Cons
No pay raise
No recognition
Poorly treated
favoritism
Advice to Senior Management
learn how to treat your employees right, and maybe you would not have a high turn over rate.
Pros
Working with some of the nicest people on earth
Cons
Some many to list; Lack support from management; Overworked; Over stressed; high turnover because people are tired of being overworked with no extra incentives or money
Advice to Senior Management
Learn the role and stop being puppets to upper management who has no idea what this role requires...
Pros
Pay is decent, good benefits
Cons
Not enough communication between supervisors and employees
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
My department is pretty laid back, we do new things
Cons
Insurance is horrible, reorganizations all the time make it hard to get a promotion
Advice to Senior Management
Be fair about promotions
Pros
Open to new ideas and change
Cons
Communication is not always adequate and depends on the reliablity of the coach (supervisor).
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to what the employees are telling you and follow through with what you tell your employees
Pros
- Vacation time wasn't too bad
- pay wasn't too bad but could be better
Cons
- management openly shows favoritism
- if you question management's ethics, you will be fired
- management doesn't know from one day to another what is going on, what your schedule will be or how to do ANYTHING!
- if management likes you, you can sit and talk for hours, while getting paid and make all the others do the work, get a great schedule and time off whenever you need it.
- it doesn't matter to management if your numbers are the highest, most efficient and accurate.
- No room for growth within department/company
- Conduct redundant group meetings every day unnecessarily, which disrupts work flow.
- Management doesn't provide enough feedback to employees as they say they would.
- Way too many bottlenecks in the department process/operation.
Advice to Senior Management
To the very highest level of management, you seriously need to see what is going on with the Order Entry FLLs as well as the department manager....there is way too much fooling around going on over there. They are not qualified to be in such roles at all.
Pros
I love the work at home aspect.
Cons
-Production based for nurses, social workers and community health educators! All they care about is meeting your goals. You will be required to work well more than 40 hours per week to meet their unattainable goals. At hire was told I would manage 220 members, now it is close to 300 and they are not stopping.
-3 weeks vacation on hire yet you are told you must work double the week prior or following vacation in order to meet your goals for the week you are off. Essentially there is NO vacation benefit! Some departments have vacation coverage but they will not consider it for mine! When submitting vacation requests my boss always reminds me I am responsible for my production goals for the week I am gone. Never does she say "enjoy your vacation!" Just a constant reminder that the work MUST be done!!!!!
-Was told one salary during interviewing process, given another lower salary when position was offered.
-Management is very condescending!
-When hired I was told my schedule would be very flexible as long as the work was complete. I was told Monday thru Friday day shift. Now I am being told I have to work evenings and Saturdays to get the work done that continues to mount.
-Management is not very open and forthcoming! Very secretive!
-Have to purchase all of your own office supplies. They will only supply one printer ink per month, NOTHING else.
-Even though you are work at home, you are monitored all the time!!!
-Constant changing of rules. My coach told me one day that what matters the most is that we reach our production goals each week. If we have reached that then we don't have to put in the 40 hours. I was sick one afternoon but was still able to exceed my production goals for that week. (This was when my member roster was very low). The next Monday I received an email from my coach stating I was below 40 hours for the week and needed to make up that time. When reminded of her original comment, she said she changed her mind.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't offer the flexibility of work at home when there is no flexibility. Promotions for Humana Cares need to come from outside of Florida as well. They are work at home positions so virutally any one could do it, they don't have to be in Florida! There are only advancement opportunites for nurses. Good for me, but not for others within Humana Cares. Stop the bait and switch....don't offer one thing and then take it back when someone is hired! That has happened to me many many times in the past 8-9 months. Get rid of the stupid and 10 and 2 rule! Apparently what is said at 10am changes by 2p....happens so often it is frustrating!
