I have been working at Humboldt State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are pretty nice and the atmosphere is relatively relaxed for a university

    Cons

It can be a bit of a popularity contest. If you aren't one of the prized employees it can be easy to be neglected. And there is animosity between some departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Foster better relationships between deparments, and opportunities to train in multiple departments in order to find the best fit.

I worked at Humboldt State University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits for retirement. Steady employment and lots of contact with students. Great atmosphere for young people.

    Cons

Too political. Cronyism and nepotism runs amuck. Managers don't hire candidates with enough experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Choose better people. Stop having to train newbies and hiring inexperienced people.

I worked at Humboldt State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

HSU is a great employer. Solid benefits, decent pay. In general, the people here are happy, helpful, and pleasant to work with. Politics and interpersonal alliances play a major part in any employees career path.

    Cons

There is a disparity in working conditions between departments and between management and staff. Hourly employees enjoy a leisurely pace and some salaried folks are pushed for more work and more hours.

The best place to work in Humboldt County, but expect to be overworked and underpaid.

I have been working at Humboldt State University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    1) Rural atmosphere leads to a wonderful place to raise a family, if you like extra space and such. Little to no traffic and great air quality are a huge plus.
    2) Excellent benefits package, one of the best in fact thanks to CalPERS mostly. Health, Vision, Dental, Pension, Fee Waiver, Vacation Accrual and Sick/Bereavement leave is wonderful.
    3) Fellow co-workers become great friends, some like family - people you can count on in a crisis.
    4) Don't know the exact figure, but lots of employees went to school here and they are passionate about seeing the school exceed student expectations, they go the extra mile to make a difference.

    Cons

    1) Low salaries and little movement through established In-Range Progression Process (IRPs). This is because HSU is allowed to interpret their own subset of criteria for the process from the bigger CSU set. HSU only awards Staff IRPs for Retention, Extra Work/Responsibility and Equity. Most other CSUs have a larger subset of criteria so be sure you understand that there is little room for growth in your salary here.
    2) After a while of working here you see patterns of problems and then solutions that previously failed come back around again and again. Tracking lessons learned would be helpful and would avoid this resource trap.
    3) The longer you work here, the more difficult it is to leave and get a more reasonable salary. The low salary problem follows you into your next job offer.
    4) If a co-worker leaves your department, by default you are assigned all of their work for no more compensation. Half the time it's a permanent increase in workload. After 2-3 of these it's not worth it anymore.
    5) If you're a minority like me, it can be tough - although it is getting better in recent years thanks to new programs and energy towards inclusion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Fear is not a good management tactic, stop using it.
    2) Our Staff evaluation system is standards based, but some managers still utilize personal perceptions in their review process, which allows some employees an opportunity for salary growth and others not so much, even though the standards are in line.
    3) Give decision making authority back to the mid level managers who are skilled in their area. Let them do their job without hinderance and fear.

I worked at Humboldt State University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

location-- beach and redwoods. Pretty laid back work environment (it is okay to wear birkenstocks). Good environmental resources programs.

    Cons

Hard to move ahead. Many people stay for life, so there are not a lot of opportunities, and it seems that they take external hires more frrequently. The vision of the university is changing, and not everyone is on the same page.
