I have been working at Hurley Medical Center full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The Hurley-Family atmosphere. It's genuine. People care about one another. Encouraged to grow within the organization - and that is awesome.

    Cons

Having to defend the reputation of the hospital being in the ghetto, or being a hospital for the poor. Reality is, this hospital is the BEST for all your loved ones.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A structured recognition and reward system would be a wonderful addition and would build morale. Better communication system in place for information to be shared down through the ranks.

I worked at Hurley Medical Center part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

This is a teaching hospital. Staff willing and able to teach. work together.

    Cons

I found the workplace to be competive, which can be a good quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This institution was very good for training, teaching, and promoting personal growth. Fair policy for "time-off", and very good to training, since it is a teaching hospital

I have been working at Hurley Medical Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Cultural diversity, union & management conflict resolution, negotiated salaries, excellent benefit package ( insurances, paid time-off, paid holidays), teaching environment. Foster Six Sigma principles and teaching.

    Cons

Changes to 'operations' seems to take longer than expected. At times, meetings don't seem as productive as should be.

Not a good place to work

I worked at Hurley Medical Center full-time

    Pros

The pay is good and fits with the market. The benefits are good and also fit with the market. That's about it.

    Cons

'tManagement doesn't walk their talk. The unions are out of control and run the place. The Board is inept and doesn't know anything about healthcare or even how to run a business. There is racism. The policies are rigid and there is no trust in employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Close the place down. The culture is awful

I worked at Hurley Medical Center part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Some very nice people scattered here and there.

    Cons

I was harassed by coworkers regarding my ethnicity, race, and culture. It was made clear through specific language stating as much that reverse discrimination is the way it's done at Hurley. Supervisors, Administration, and Union Officials did nothing to help me - told me workplace bullying is nothing more than "hazing".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reference Lowana Shanell Dumas v Hurley Medical Center, case number 2:10-12661 at the United States District Court for the Eastern District and Southern Division of Michigan. Another case which settled and involved reverse discrimination is Rick Wansitler v Hurley Medical Center, but that one has already settled, so Mr. Wansitler, per the terms of the settlement agreement, is not allowed to say anything disparaging about Hurley. I will not allow my voice to be silenced!

I worked at Hurley Medical Center

    Pros

Excellent working environment. Quick pay increases. Awesome experiences.

    Cons

Hurley is in a not-so-good neighborhood. Within Hurley's employee handbook it states that no employee shall have on his/her person, or in his/her vehicle anything that could be described as a "weapon". So, for those of us that are CPL holders, you cannot protect yourself while driving into the heart of the most violent city in the nation, or you risk being fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the "no weapons" policy for employees. Allow CPL (concealed pistol license) holders to leave their "weapon" secured in their vehicle as the law states they can on hospital property. Your employees are driving through the most violent city in the nation, to care for some of these criminals and victims at your hospital, and you allow them no ability to protect themselves during their drive to and from work.

I have been working at Hurley Medical Center

    Pros

Diverse work community, teaching hospital, #1 Pediatric trauma center in the area, city hospital-serves underinsured customers

    Cons

The trend lately has been laying off of support staff (laundry, dietary) but hiring more people in upper management postions

I have been working at Hurley Medical Center

    Pros

It is the best medical facility in our area, our physician's, nurses as well as other staff are very caring.

    Cons

way too busy in our department for the amount of staff, we tend to over work the wonderful nurses we employ and eventually they find less stressful positions else where.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more nursing and nurses aides, staff daily with the expectation that there will be call offs. I think if we can balance the daily schedule there would be a lot less stress.
