I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great people. A thorough recruiting process weeds out most of the folks you wouldn't want to work or travel with. Smart analysts and associates who are comfortable with complex problem solving and dealing with ambiguity. Managers who care about their people. A large company focus on diversity.

Strong corporate infrastructure. Solid HR Team and compensation model. Transparency around bonuses and raises. Excellent Training Team and training offerings. Courses that align with career growth. A strong emphasis on coaching and developing coach / coachee relationships. A well-established / well-run corporate Operations Team - helps make selling and running projects less of an adminstrative hassle. Work / life balance programs. A solid career path - you can stay at Huron for the long run and continue to grow.

Many opportunities to be recognized or get involved with company culture outside of project life - iMatter Teams, networking events, and company conferences.

    Cons

The typical challenges of a consulting lifestyle - longer hours, travel that keeps you from home, hotel / corporate apartment living.

Some questionable leadership - but nothing out of the ordinary for any other consulting company. Some MDs and SDs who have managed to stick around for too long despite limited contributions to sales or project execution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the emphasis on corporate culture and the programs that recognize / focus on work life balance and career growth.

    Pros

There are no pros. Maybe a certain degree of knowledge attainment. And, the travel points when you travel Monday - Thursday.

    Cons

Everything, everything, everything. This is the worst job I ever had and the management was horrendous. Work life balance does not exist. Micromanagement and rear view mirror performance review is rampant in this organization. To call it a hostile work environment is a friendly description compared to what the company is really like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all the Managing Directors and start fresh. This company is where unprofessional consultants go to die. Cronyism at its finest.

Travel but this is true of any consulting job.

    Pros

Dynamic, Young, Energetic Culture. Given responsibilities early on. Provides opportunities in both technical and interpersonal areas. Opportunities to travel and work with different clients.

    Cons

Travel and time commitments are greater than in other careers. Sometimes people in supervisory positions are not very well equipped to manage. Often the rate of advancement is dependent on turnover above you just as much as it is upon your abilities.

I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There is not a lot of good that I can say about Huron. The LCG is focused on low value add activities that can be billed quickly. No real strategy or performance improvement work in their practice.

    Cons

In order to succeed at Huron you need to sell a lot of low value work that you can premium bill. This usually means litigation support that you outsource to India.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need stronger focus on "value added" services for clients.
    Better professional development opportunities.
    Improved mentoring.

I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Decent money
Some very bright, dedicated co-workers (but the best didn't stay long)

    Cons

Leadership totally disengaged from entry and mid-level employees
Constantly acquiring new practices and additional consultants without planning for integration and support
    Poor communication between departments
HUGE workloads (80 hours a week or more are expected and vacations are rare)
Managers expect 24/7 availability from their employees
    Outdated technology
High turnover (over 40 percent in my group during the year that I was there)
Very strong resistance to change and progress

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at what has and hasn't worked with the practices you have already acquired before scooping up any more.
Realize that much of your support staff left as soon as the job market started to improve

    Pros

Good structure - profit sharing with option to purchase stock - lots of learning opportunities. Lots of really smart people. Good PTO policy.

    Cons

Work just depends on how "lucky" you are and who you are with. Hard to give upward feedback. Hard to get promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help some MDs be better at managing people - we want to learn but hard when MDs are not present.
