I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Rarely have to work weekends
    Some good staff

    Cons

    100% travel
    Below market pay
Hires people based on select experience, not intelligence, creating situations where employees are only staffable on unique projects

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are creating a commodity with your current strategy
Charging extremely low rates to clients, resulting in not giving bonuses or raises to staff creates high turnover thus this is not truly a consulting firm, more of a canned solution that anybody can deliver

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time

    Pros

    - Strong emphasis on professional development
    - Great benefits and travel policy
    - Ability to make an impact early in career
    - Shorter hours than most consultancies

    Cons

    - No real feeling of company unity since most work at home on Fridays, making it difficult to meet coworkers outside of your project team
    - Rigid chain of command
    - Insistence on using Huron methodology does not allow for individual creativity
    - Compensation below industry standards

Echoing a prior review, Huron stresses becoming a "specialist" over a "generalist" which is what many individuals look for in a consultancy. It drives benefits for the client, but leaves consultants pigeonholed at times. Extremely difficult to get a breadth of experience, particularly within the healthcare practice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Place a higher emphasis on the ideas your people have over the methodology, bottom line, and stock price.

I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent salary, good benefits (health insurance, etc), rewards for heavy travel

    Cons

Not great with work/life balance in spite of lip service unless you live in the city where you are consulting. Some evidence of gender discrimination against women.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't allow consultants bear the burden for discounts given to clients. Allow training time and internal meetings to counted as billable hours.

I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Awesome coworkers who bring it everyday. Lots of flexibility to move around and experience different phases of software lifecycle. Love the vibe of the Portland Office. Management is very supportive of new ideas, let's you run with them, and gives you credit even if it didn't materialize into something tangible. Coworkers and management are committed to doing great work for our clients, but also keep an eye on having fun at work. Great place to launch and build your career

    Cons

At times things can seem to operate a bit in silo's. Some items like knowledge management could be better and more accessible, but given the growth of the Healthcare segment it's understandable that this might be lagging some. Comp at times can be a little behind the market, but generally catches up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue to keep it real!

    Pros

Great learning opportunity for undergrads fresh out of school and pays pretty well out of school. The benefits and perks are more than fair.

    Cons

Promotions requirements can be a little unclear especially anything after the Associate level. The workload can greatly very from team to team and project to project.

I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good compensation, and great PTO policy. As with many consulting firms, it is nice to work with smart and driven colleagues. I have had significant career opportunities to grow as long as I was willing to react to feedback and always looking for opportunities outside of my regular work. Huron has treated me well in that regard.

    Cons

Leadership consistently chooses short-sighted profit over long-term cultural goals. Understandable, but can be frustrating at times. The moment we have a lull in work, management focuses on strong initiatives, but has little resolve to stick to them if we sell more work.

I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Other team members are strong

    Cons

No direction from upper management and no autonomy to lead teams. Salary is below market. Bonus pool hasn't been funded for years at 100%

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your talent, and then give them the autonomy to impact the organization.
