I worked at Hutchinson Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There aren't any pros due to the lack of profitability and the subsequent negativity that produces.

    Cons

The company is not profitable, and isn't improving. Opportunities are also going away with the Assembly off shoring to Thailand.

  6. Very technical questions were asked.

I have been working at Hutchinson Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great challanges in a good environment, interesting array of technology and processes, great co-worker team-work

    Cons

Little opportunity for advancement, stagnant / declining pay and benefits over the last 5+ years

    Advice to Management

Employee moral can have a direct impact on Quality. Find a way to get people motivated and excited for the future of the company.

I worked at Hutchinson Technology full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great salary, benefits, personal improvement classes offered when I worked there.

    Cons

Many layoffs, hiring of temp workers that were unprofessional/ used foul language on occasion when I worked there. Private cafeteria closed and hot water machine was removed. Had to walk to cafeteria area to get coffee.

    Advice to Management

Dump or sell the bio division and concentrate on gaining market share. The factory in Thailand never should have been built on a flood prone area, would have been better to keep the assembly jobs in the U.S so they could purchase the hard drives we helped make...

  9. Great place to work twenty years ago, OK place to work now.

    Pros

Overall this is a fairly decent place to work. The pay is excellent for skilled positions and the benefits are average.

    Cons

The biggest issue now is the loss of market share and inability to reverse that trend in the near future, if at all.

    Advice to Management

Step back and compare your company's current status compared to ten to fifteen years ago and take the necessary actions to turn this thing around. Make honest business decisions based on only business, not personal relationships.

  10. Working as an Engineer with HTI.

    Pros

Breadth of skills and knowledge that you gain working at HTI is second to none. After, at least a year or two of working there, you will have gained experience in engineering tools and techniques that could be beneficial in future employment positions, should you seek to move to another company. The employees are all friendly and helpful and, for the most part, work together very well, keeping the focus on the common goal of making good produc t and minimizing scrap.

    Cons

The downside is the current financial position of the company, which has led to multiple layoffs and corporate restructuring, leaving behind a wave of overworked employees with little incentive or motivation to stay with the company.

    Advice to Management

The leadership is probably doing the best that they can, given the current financial position of the company.

  11. Hutchinson Technologies

Former Employee - Engineer in Hutchinson, MN

    Pros

HTI excels in employee training, leadership growth, and encouraging employee empowerment. Teamwork among employees is second to none. If the business environment were better, HTI could be one of the best places to work.

    Cons

The town of Hutchinson is fairly remote and the housing market is very dependent on the activities of HTI. Because of the lack of diversification, HTI experiences many ups and downs, leading to frequent hiring and layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Diversify fast. Find creative ways to avoid hiring for the business upticks and layoff during the downturns. The past layoffs were lose-lose. HTI paid out severances and for outservices, employees had to find jobs while unemployed and without benefits. With some creativity, employees could have been given the opportunity to find work while employed and HTI could have avoided severance and maintained a more positive work envirment. A win-win.
