I have been working at Hy-Vee part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Everything is based on the Kitchen department
    - Great starting pay $8.50 and easy to get pay raises
    - Easy to get hired
    - Friendly co workers
    - Diverse staff and costumers
    - Fun environment
    - understanding Manager
    - Easy to get time off
    - Flexible scheduling
    - If you are in school they understand that school is more important
    - Options to move departments to get more experience
    - Opportunity for college scholarships
    - Company holiday parties
    - Fast pased

    Cons

If you wear a blue shirt your life basically sucks. My friends have worked as cashiers and baggers and all they do is complain about how they cant get time off and how nobody will work with their schedule and how management is just rude. for example my sister had put in a request a month prior to have a day off so she could take the ACT. When she didn't get it off the manager told her that her part time job was more important than higher education. Their is also a manager who had been fired for sexual harassment but than was rehired. They do not fire people ever. That can sound like a good thing but for those of us who actually show up and do our work this can be very frustrating. If a person becomes to much of a problem they just move them to a different department. Up front management is also very disrespectful of other departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being *******. From my experience the Kitchen and Deli managers are the only ones who actually deserve their position. Understand that most of your staff if high school students who are only here to work through school. RESPECT EVERYBODY!!

    I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    coworkers
great culture and values for a grocery store
    active, fast passed environment
paid breaks for part time employees
matching 401k, good benefits for full time employees (given it is a grocery store)
quarterly bonuses for full time managers
Company is very adaptive to change for the better
    advancement opportunities
flexible hours for part time employees
The biggest pro i took from HyVee were the skills and abilities i was tough by senior management.

    Cons

    low pay
scheduled work hours are not always ideal, work holidays
    no tuition reimbursement
stores can be short on help at times to cut back on budget
workload can be overwhelming especially around holidays and 1 day sales
called in to help when short staffed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At the store I worked at, the director made a substantial amount more than those right below him. Spread the wealth to management to keep them around. Otherwise, keep up the hard work!

    I worked at Hy-Vee full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great pay and awesome benefits.

    Cons

If there is ever a problem, they won't fix it. This company avoids conflict like the plague. If you point out a problem, it's much more likely that they will get rid of you, rather than deal with the issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop walking on eggshells and take a stand. Change is necessary and needed. Seniority without merit is meaningless.

    Pros

    Cons

Management is poor. No consequences for not showing up or calling in. Lower management has to meet ridiculous expectations set by upper management.

    Pros

nice people to work with, time went by very fast, cool people to work with, time went by fast for the most part.

    Cons

Very tough to on schedule. seems to be a very over priced store for the most part, or at least I think so

I have been working at Hy-Vee full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The autonomy of the company makes it hard to imagine working for another retailer.
When you get into management it really is as though you are running your own business.

    Cons

Work life balance is difficult with long hours, holidays, and weekends. Opportunities are there but do requrie a great deal of patience and sometimes becomes unclear if you are on the right path to success within the company.

I worked at Hy-Vee part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Less corporate than working for a place like Walgreens - pharmacy is not open 24 hours, coworkers were easy to work with/for.

    Cons

Less than stellar pay, no employee discount besides once quarterly 10% off, can not work over 30 hours because they do not want to give part timer's benefits.
25 cent raise every year - thought I was being way underpaid based on local discussions with competitors such as Walgreens - even though Walgreens is definitely worse to work for.
Still very corporate as rules are handed down from the top to the store managers to the pharmacy managers that just make no logistical sense to the pharmacy so you can tell that they really have no clue about the overall operations.
