Asset Strategy (Current Employee)

I have been working at Hydro One as an intern

ProsReally good first job if you are interested in Power Systems. friendly work environment, you get to learn a lot from meetings. Good benefits, great office, and working in downtown helps, also has gym in building.

ConsSometimes work is slow, deadlines sometimes aren't very clear. Processes sometimes are slow

Depends if you are in the union

IT (Former Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at Hydro One full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat company to work for if you are a union employee. Great benefits, salary increases, job security, and vacation.

ConsNo incentive to work or move into management here. Management gets less benefits, vacation, and possibly less pay then its employee's. Salaries are frozen and things are not getting better. Under performing union employees are protected by their unions.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide more incentives for management. Union gets way more and has job protection/security.

Many layers to the hierarchy, experience depends on which group you work for.

Analyst (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Hydro One full-time for more than a year

ProsHigh pay, good benefits, focus on safety and employee well-being. Provides lots of opportunities to apprentices/co-op students, allowing for growth in our younger work force.

ConsHierarchical, constant changes to management, upward mobility is limited depending on who you know and not what you know.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on employee skills rather than their relationship with upper management when it comes to promotions/upward mobility.

Good for stability

Junior Engineer (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Hydro One full-time for more than 5 years

ProsStable, Work/Life Balance, Union can protect against exploitation, The work is generally innovative and customer focused

ConsMid level managers are busy fighting fires and focused on their own reputations
Short sighted organization due to regulation structure
Much of the public and customers are dissatisfied with the company
Opportunities to move up or laterally happen once every 7-12 years
Mid level managers actively discourage any employee development
Business is shrinking and any new business goes exclusively to consultants/contractors

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on customers, not the headlines. Constant organizational/management changes are a distraction with negative results. Don't fire people without cause to appease the media, employees will lose faith.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

A very professional place, would work here again

Co-op Student (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Hydro One full-time for less than a year

ProsVery good pay, everyone is nice, everyone is professional, a good diverse group. Also it is in a pretty awesome location (downtown Toronto). The building is also very nice and convenient.

ConsSometimes not enough work is given, you might have to find ways to keep busy. The company is very structured, but there seems to be some reshuffling and what not since a new CEO has been appointed.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work!

"You Didn't wear a Mini-Skirt"

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Hydro One

ProsGood pay for the little amount of work you do.

A tight deadline is considered "Can you get this done in 2014?"
It's only a good place to work because of the pay and pension if you get hired on as regular.

ConsUnfair promoting / contract extension procedures. Being hired as MP4 at the same time an MP2 was hired in our group. One would assume MP4 to have some advantage(Skills, Experiences, Education). However all that gets thrown out the window. As one Sr. well respected employee over 30 years @ Hydro One simply said "You didn't wear a mini skirt".

Also I never understood why Managers could get work from home regularly but us employees could rarely get this. Double standard.

Advice to Senior ManagementHow does this company stay solvent like seriously...

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
