I have been working at Hydro One

    Pros

Being apart of such a renowned copmany and being thrown into an incredibly intensive professional environment has taught me valuable life lessons which have opened my eyes to what is required after leaving university.

    Cons

The amount of work comes in waves. You generally stay quite busy, although the fluctuating work loads forces you to build excellent time managment and prioritization skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been extrememly pleased with my experience

Current Contractor - Electrician Supervisor in Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Hydro One as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Safety and quality of overall work experience. Usually you have no issue getting the tools needed to do your job right. We get to work in a very unique environment.

    Cons

Government organization, so you don't get as much of a competitive career growth. We tend to have very incompetent managers. We also have way too many rules and proceedures, if we followed every procedure we would never get any work done. People also assume you are useless if you work for hydro one, although there are a lot of useless people we have a lot of experienced and talented electricians here!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Competitive wages, get rid of the slackers. For example, we have one individual who is a completely incompetent electrician and instead of getting rid of her they made her a supervisor but gave her no one to supervise and now she drives around to different crews to sell raffle tickets for charities. Waste of 100k a year right there!

I worked at Hydro One as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Great team, interesting work. Compensation and work life balance was excellent.

    Cons

The organization rarely hires full time permanent employees. Most roles are filled on contract.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open minded regarding employees age in the workplace. It was made very clear to me that the future direction is to hire a young workforce.
