Current Employee - Electrical Production in Philadelphia, PA

I have been working at Hyundai Rotem USA

    Pros

The best reason to work here would be the occasional unlimited overtime

    Cons

It's a union position and it sucks, they will lay you off with no warning; I was laid off 2 weeks after I moved into a new apartment, 3 weeks before Christmas and 4 weeks before my Son's birthday, I'm a single parent and they took no pity on that. No warning was given. The starting salary is pathetic for the type of work you do if you're in production

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on employee morale and development

I have been working at Hyundai Rotem USA

    Pros

Company is definitely multicultural and somewhat conveniently located in Philadelphia. There's no growth, so it's only good for temporary. Just learn as much as you can as fast as you can and get out.

    Cons

Very self-contained, adamant, awkward HR policies - or lack thereof, thick skull mgmt, people don't speak English, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't have much advice for the management, as they are all from Korea and that's probably how they manage a firm over there.

    Negative Outlook

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more consideration for local full tie workers.
Many employee think that job assignment and annual evaluation are not fare.

Former Employee - Recycling Coordinator in Philadelphia, PA

I worked at Hyundai Rotem USA full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Steady work schedule. Start time usually the same, and always has Sundays off. Second, overtime is available if in correct position. You work in recycling good luck, otherwise, you are in good hands. Finally, if you not in recycling or housekeeping, then skills are transferable to other companies.

    Cons

Lack of raises. I worked for to years straight without out. I understand if company losing money, but they made giant profits. Second, you can not move up. One you hired, you remain there forever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teach Korean to Americans for better communication.

    Pros

    - Willing to accept employee without previous experience in position
    - Frequent lunch outings with higher ups

    Cons

    - Willing to offer employee new position, then terminate position after hiring replacement for old position
    - Upper management has expectations outside of job description and company work (wash car, buy groceries, cook ramen, etc.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Hyundai Rotem USA

    Pros

Very sad, but there's only one positive to working here - the health benefits.

    Cons

    Hostile work environment
    Known and consistent discrimination
    Smoking inside the building
Lack of heat in winter and AC in the summer
Building falling apart and they refuse to take care of it
    They're cheap
    Lack of communication
language barrier - need a translator
    Underpaid and no advancement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to get a clue and realize that their way of doing business and their treatment towards employees isn't working and never has. It may help to take some tips from successful foreign companies (like a Samsung) that have been working in the US.

I have been working at Hyundai Rotem USA

    Pros

    Pretty good medical insurance benefits.

    Cons

Slow or no advancement within the company.
Poor communications overall- managers do not share necessary information.
Managers not willing to listen to other ideas and sticks to the "traditional" way, even when it's clearly not working.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Utilize all employees you hire instead of trying to do everything between the Korean managers. There are many others that are willing to take on more responsibilities, but managers seem to underestimate their employees. Most people are eager to work hard when they're first hired, but over time they feel under-appreciated and stop trying. Also, need to stop micro-managing.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
