Pros
Great career stepping stone and opportunity to work on great internet properties with some of the smartest people.
Cons
More cons than pros. Very politically driven, chaotic environment lacking clear vision. Associates may be smart, but management severely lacks in how to do their jobs, specific to a particular business unit.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire manager with less ego know how to do their jobs and able to adapt to a dynamic environment we call the internet.
Pros
Flexible Time Off and Working Hours. Ask.com is small enough company to be able to learn lot of things. Good Benefits. Current Direction is correct focus but then it has only been few months into it.
Cons
Senior Management does not what is technology and they are leading Ask.com Search Technology Group. Constant Change in Direction. Big Issues between main and satellite office with communication completely broken between them. Bonuses are never paid as promised.
Advice to Senior Management
Reward performance rather then the projects that someone works on. Value talent and bring more technical people in senior management.
Pros
Interesting business model, forward thinking in the media space
Cons
Poor leadership at the top; favoritism; little respect for due process
Advice to Senior Management
its all about the business and not about the employees; for better retention think about the employees who are not the "favorites"
Pros
you can learn many technologies for a fresh graduate,
there is opportunity for growth
Cons
lost the focus,
change the strategies from time to time
management is not good at technology
Advice to Senior Management
try to the leader in industry, not only the follower
Pros
IAC offers good payment to it's employee, it has flexible working schedule, employees are treated well and fairly, the engineering problem can be challenging.
Cons
The CEOs have been changing quite often, everyone presents a change of the product direction, even good product can be thrown away by new upper management team, probably because of too much pressures or expectations for them.
Advice to Senior Management
need people who not only be able to talk, but most important is some people who is able to work out some real solution, shall have review for managers from employee
Pros
Well known company that is moderately respected. There are good, nice people here. Money and benefits are also above average for a company this large in size
Cons
Management is dysfunctional and does not value lower level staff, lots of wasted talent. Managers dont allow them to see the strengths of their staff or encourage/allow for personal growth.
Advice to Senior Management
Take time to get to know the staff better and recognize their accomplishments and contributions,
Pros
good work/life balance
pay is reasonable
some talented people pass through - good to create a network
nobody looking over your shoulder or watching the clock
can take responsible for your own projects
good as a stepping stone to a better job elsewhere; people often leave in groups for the same company
easy commute
Cons
To create something new, have to wait for a competitor to implement it first, so we'd have something to copy; would have to sit on ideas for a long time because of this.
Lack of new initiatives make it harder to keep up your skills, so staying too long could make finding a job more difficult.
To get promoted, you have to either be someone's close friend or relative, or show that you have offers elsewhere. The people who most deserve the promotions usually take the offers.
Career development is practically non-existent.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop treating the company like your personal ATM. Don't act like you have no idea what's going on in the company.
Pros
Everyone else except the management people are very talented engineers. The very few remaining good engineers are very friendly, helpful, and respectful. You can learn new stuff.
Cons
Management is dysfunctional, promotions are based on whether you work on the hottest project at the time of evaluation and not on your past full year of work. Annual review is useless. No career or salary growth unless you know the right people. Talent is unhappy and leaving rapidly. HR person is wonderful but powerless.
Advice to Senior Management
Lay off more managers. Hire more engineers. 2 layers of managers are enough for an efficient productive company. Focus on career growth. Stop giving useless gifts. Remuneration and company events matter more.
Pros
Challenging issues and working with smart dedicated employees who strive to help one another. Good colloboration even under duress and heavy workloads. Fast paced and always something new to learn. Fun work environment includes regular socializing and team building. Welcoming environment for new employees.
Cons
Lots of management turnover make for a new strategy every year. Frequent New York and California culture clash results in poor communication.
Advice to Senior Management
Be consistent in expectations.
Pros
Line staff are great and easy to work with
Still a small company
Able to contribute on tangible, visible products
Cons
Upper management changes strategy frequently and it often feels like they're using a dart board to pick the current direction
No vision, other than trying to copy others
Advice to Senior Management
Identify a unique, creative, and realistic vision and go for it
