Pros
Name Recognition
Decent Pay
Opportunities for Global Experience
Awesome Knowledge Base/ Network of Experts
Cons
Strategy & Transformation consulting is weak relative to IT consulting
Heavy bureaucracy
Sometimes limited ability to control career path
Inconsistent project experiences, with wildly varying degree of competency among project leaders
Advice to Senior Management
Figure out what you how you really want to position your S&T consulting practice in the market
Pros
Usually viewed as a plus on the resume. Some truly excellent co-workers, though also some dead wood protected by management.
Cons
IBM will take as much as you are willing to give, so you need to set boundaries. Rationale for raises/promotions is vague at best - management doesn't get much of a "raise budget" to pass around, and raises seem to go out based on personal relationships more than merit.
Pros
name recognition, ibm ibm ibm
Cons
inside sales in IBM makes no sense. inside, cross brand, field reps, client reps, etc etc call into same accounts, no one knows/understand the majority of solutions and the customer environments/needs, yet they all spend hrs reporting status/updates/fake forecasts to their managers when actually someone else doing the job.
Advice to Senior Management
IBM Managers need to understand how Sales departments at other companies work and how those are real sales jobs and real sales managers.
Pros
Good company to start a career at. Average benefits.
Cons
Like any other multinational. Employees are fodder for the international business machine. A$$ kissers advance easily. Real talent often overlooked. 1st and 2nd line management usually not qualified. Stodgy, "Think" moving an elephant.
Take the job knowing you will leave in a few years. It's a good training ground but be ready to move on to move up. Sales rules. You'll do good there as long as you make the club but watch out for bum territory assignments if you are too successful. That's how they dump you. It is unspoken but you are not allowed to make too much in sales. Engineering is dead end, no different from other multinationals. Learn something and move on.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in America. Stop outsourcing and stomping on American workers. Stop whining about corp tax cuts. Be the IBM of Watson and not the A$$ holes that you currently are.
Pros
Good benefits package and flexible schedules
Cons
Miscommunication from senior management and conflicting information about how the company is doing.
Pros
The company itself and all the super smart people
Cons
Too bearucratic to get things done
Advice to Senior Management
delegate more of the decsion making
Pros
It's a Resume builder. You might get some education, if you're lucky.
Cons
A friend of mine left in March, they didn't get the commission check for January or February cut until June. They also tried to shortchange on vacation time and severance pay. Very poor ethics. I'll remember that when I leave and won't give them the chance to do me wrong. Shows you the true colors of the management team and what you're thought of as an employee.
Advice to Senior Management
They wouldn't listen, so why waste the time.
Pros
IBM has good benefits and offers opportunities that vary across differnet jobs
Cons
Poor decisions around offshoring lately have caused client satisfaction issues
Advice to Senior Management
Dont just focus on costs
Pros
Benefit package is better than average technology company.
Cons
All works contracted out or hired off-shore.
Pros
IBM offers great Benefits for their employees.
Cons
With this division of IBM employees are viewed as a resource. The employee is not the most valued resource, profit and revenue is the only driver with IBM. IBM is move a lot of jobs offshore, and/or replacing full time employees with temp or contractors staff.
Advice to Senior Management
IBM needs to take a poll of any employees that are still around to see what their moral, and confidence in the company. They might be very surprise to see that most employees are very unhappy. I would venture to say worse than the industry average of about 33% to 39%.
