Long-term IBM employee

Human Resources Manager (Current Employee)
Sydney (Australia)

I have been working at IBM part-time for more than 10 years

ProsWorking for IBM over a very long period of time, they were able to offer me a lot of flexibility to incorporate some the changes I experienced in my person life. I think some of these flexibility options need to be earnt, rather than expected.

ConsIBM is going through an extremely difficult period, with cost savings, revenue challenges and massive redundancies, making it very difficult current working conditions.

Frustrating...(Odyssey Billing transformation Project)

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

I worked at IBM as a contractor for more than a year

ProsSome great individuals mostly in contractor ranks.
The rank and file personnel want to work hard and contribute.

ConsRegular high turnover rate for middle management, in difficult times.
Lack of support from senior management.
Lack of understanding by management/leadership exactly what/how needs to be done.
Environment and culture...really too political to be truly productive.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior Management needs to concentrate on delivering honest value to the customer, instead of focusing solely on revenue.
Promote your competent staff. Look beyond the internal politics and in-fighting.

Good company however only cares about bottom line. No interest in employee career progression.

Problem Manager (Former Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat company to work for, however experience can be drastically different depending on the management.
Big brands are usually good to have on resume, helps later in life.
If you are keeping in contact with people around you, opportunity to grow internally is pretty good.

ConsEver since the new CEO (Ginni) joined the company has gone downhill.
Employee benefits are close to nill now, there used to be a lot more. Cost cutting has ruined the culture.
IBM is known globally for cheap labour, they don't like to pay any more than the minimum rate.
Difficult to survive if you are not part of the bureaucratic system
Lots of politics and internal jobs are given based on internal links/boys club
If you are not keeping up with the politics redundancies can come knocking at your door any minute.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease invest towards future and not just focus on meeting target line today. If the company keeps going this way there will be no business left in future. Provide training to your employees when they have been asking for it for over 2 years.

Poor compensation and a lot of admin

Managing Consultant (Current Employee)

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood brand. Opportunity to work on large IT transformation programs. Can cover end to end needs(strategy, implementation, software, hardware, etc.). Good graduate program.

ConsToo much admin, with many offshored processes. Expected to sell, deliver, innovate and manage staff but compensation is not there. Leadership is not inspirational; just task orientated.

Advice to Senior ManagementAttract better people and reward them. The rest will follow.

Don't think IBM will help you in career progression

Project Manager (Former Employee)
Sydney (Australia)

I worked at IBM for more than 5 years

ProsAccess to the largest library of technical information. Depending on what account you work on, you may be exposed to interesting but not bleeding edge technology.

ConsNo interest in allowing you to gain qualifications at IBM expense. You should plot your career progress yourself.
Very bad managers are just moved around the organisation spreading their crap on others unfortunate to be on their team.
Poor remuneration in relation to market rates.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of bad managers & apologise to staff who have had to put up with them.
