I have been working at IBM full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Dynamic work environment, complex problem solving required, great deal of independence in workload, great team to work with, excellent work-life balance

    Cons

The biggest issue with working here is the uncertain future for the semiconductor operations - sometimes its hard to focus on day-to-day details when a large uncertainty is looming over everything

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great work life balance. They treat you like a person.

    Cons

Little to no raises. You can count on them canceling one of the two standard raises. When you do get one, 1-2% is common. Few promotions. Seniority plays as big of a role in promotions and moving to management (a wait list of people)

I have been working at IBM full-time

    Pros

The people at IBM are incredible: talented, brilliant, innovative, and constantly working to do the right thing. I love working with such motivated and friendly people.

Of course, there are always more things to do, so there is always a chance to branch out at least a little bit to try something new and open up some new skillsets for yourself.

Telecommuting (as an engineer) is very common, especially given the automation and IT infrastructure of the fab. It's not unusual to work from home if you need to.

    Cons

The microelectronics division seems to be often overlooked by the larger company, though it clearly is a key part of the overall picture, especially for the server brand. That impression leads to a common concern about how much the company cares to invest and pay attention to this relatively small but amazing team of co-workers in the microelectronics arena.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through in your attempts to gain your employees' trust. What you've done in the past decade has not worked, and we can see through the lipservice...after all, you hired us *because* of our intelligence, so treat us in kind.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good technical environment (semiconductor business) to expand knowledge base. Empowered to do experiments as needed, to find answers to ongoing problems.

    Cons

Penny pinching. CEO and executives are focused ONLY on "EPS" (Earnings Per Share), and the price of common stock. After all, this how they grow their personal wealth...through stock options. Living in constant fear of being sold off or outsourced. No conferences allowed. Very little new equipment purchased for our lab. Seem to be "cooking the books", for years now, to make the division more attractive to potential suitors. Forget about meaningful salary increases. Many, many years since I saw one of those.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drop your allegiance to the company, as the company no longer has any allegiance to you, personally. You are as expendable as a paper towel. Do not hide information from your employees. Tell them everything you know.

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of very smart people. IBM has great capabilities to develop and debug cool products. Managers are generally skilled and bright enough not to micromanage. They let you do things your way as long as you get your job done.

    Cons

Poor morale caused by frequent layoffs. Upper management doesn't share much information about the hardware division's future trajectory. Pay raises and bonuses have been scarce for several years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow cuts to staffing is not working for the company or employees. A mission that is appropriate to our new staffing size needs to clearly stated and then implemented. Start sharing more big picture information.
