Pros
Fun enviroment
Friendly people
Everyone wants you to do well
Cons
People seem to be there just to gain money...they don't look very happy
Pros
good salary for the area.
Cons
Get the work out of you more than they pay you .
Pros
You have many growth opportunities within the company
Cons
The company is too big and everything is based on rules and regulation
Pros
Education, Opportunity, Personal Growth, Stability are all some of the best attributes of IBM. There certainly is a lot of opportunities for career, education and personal growth within IBM, the number of programs out there for employees is huge, sometimes that is also the problem. With IBM there are times where you feel like a number. Currently IBM has approx. 400K employees and sometimes you feel like a very small piece of that number other times when all is going well and your management team supports and publicly recognizes you and or your work it seems much smaller. Overall the combination of salary, benefits, flexibility, employee development programs and stability are all reasons to work for IBM if you can get beyond being a number.
Cons
Breaking into management is difficult, even if you have talent and competency to become a manager sometimes you get overlooked because the hiring managers already have someone in mind and are only going through the motions of a job posting/interviews before officially giving the job to their person.
Like in the other post, there are times where being one of 400K can seem overwhelming and you feel small and overlooked by being so large. The key is to getting an excellent manager to support you and to be passionate about employee development otherwise you will get lost in the shuffle.
Advice to Senior Management
Look outside the box, empower your employees more and be passionate about fighting for what is right and your employees.
Pros
Telecommuting, Flexible hours, Very competenct technical employees.
Cons
Terrible People Management. Virtually all jobs are moving off-shore. Sweatshop atmosphere.
Advice to Senior Management
Spend some time focused on the people and not the bottom line. There is a direct correlation.
Pros
For a motivated employee, the sky is the limit and the opportunities are endless at IBM. You can work from anywhere in the world and IBM provides excellent work from home opportunities.
Cons
The only downside is the size of the organization. In other words, you'll be a small fish in an ocean! However, there are plenty of opportunities to make your way up the corporate ladder.
Advice to Senior Management
Management can do better planning. Even initial/incomplete plans should be conveyed to the employees at all levels. This will avoid employee resentment since they'll be prepared for what's coming.
Pros
40% of IBM employees are work from home employees. They do believe in a work/life balance for the most part.
Cons
The will work you to the bone if you'll let them. Recently, while the company is making LOTS of money it is not being channelled back in the form of increased salaries or training of their employees.
Advice to Senior Management
FIRE all contractors who are underperforming so the regular hires don't have to carry them. Open your coffers and give outside training to your employees - they are your BEST resources.
Open a REAL dialog with your employees and you will learn just how disfunctional things are.
As a remote employee I haven't seen my manager in over 3 years - he only lives 3 hrs away!
LEARN how to recognize your hardest working employees - that's why you're still employed!
