I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You get to work with some very smart and talented people. IBM is way ahead of most firms in their willingness to let you work from home provided you have a job that is conducive to that. If you are lucky, you may get to work on some very interesting projects. IBM is helping to make the world a better place through improvements to health care and education. They are very ethical in their business dealings.

    Cons

When I was hired back in the 1990s you had to have at least a 3.5 GPA; they were also picky about what schools and majors were acceptable. That's fine if you are also willing to pay above average salaries, but from my experience they are not. IBM compares their salaries to what similar firms are paying their employees and tries to keep at or below those salaries. If you are below the salary mid point and have a 2+ or 1 review (top 15%) than you may get a small pay raise. If you are a 2 performer, which is about 70% of the people, you can forget about getting a raise or a promotion for at least a year.

    Advice to Management

You need to pay your employees what they are worth, not at or below the industry average.

  3. High hiring standards with only average pay

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible work-life balance and ability to work from home are best things about IBM. There are lots of different jobs and work locations spread around the country, but I've found it difficult to move around. If you graduate from one of the "Blue Schools" and can get on one of the executive fast track list, you've got it made.

    Cons

IBM only hires the top students (at least the did when they hired me back in 1998), but they only pay industry average salaries. If you want to take a job at a new location you have to pay for the move yourself.; unless you are an executive. There is little job growth or opportunity beyond a band 9 unless you are on some executive fast track list.

    Advice to Management

Forget what college people went to and look at their job performance when deciding who to fast track. You are missing some excellent people and promoting some people who are not the best and brightest.
