Pros
IBM is a top place to challenge your self. The top two Pros are Flexibility (work/life balance), and Technical Challenges
Cons
Just two areas that the company needs to improve Salary, and rewards for top performance lacks.
Advice to Senior Management
reward talent with top pay compare to Google, and Microsoft
Pros
talented peers, especially pre-sales Engineers, good benefits package
Cons
sales compensation lacking, lower salaries, territory assignments very political.
Pros
There are many roles within Finance that you may be able to have, Finance people constantly switch roles within the company. People are nice for the most part.
Cons
From what I heard from full time employees salary is not the best, and everything is highly based on very strict deadlines, You may put in many hours a week and see no compensation for it. Since it is such a big company and people switch jobs constantly, you may never find an answer for some of your questions, or it may take for ever.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide better compensation to employees and be more conscious about their personal time outside IBM, just because all employees have lap tops, that does not mean they should always be working.
Pros
IBM is globally a big name, you can relocate easily within the company. It is a highly stable place with very low chances of getting laid off.
Cons
chances of growth are low. The pay is not high. The company is sort of dull in terms of the old buildings.
Advice to Senior Management
Promote a more enjoyable working environment.
Pros
Opportunity to work with some of the best and brightest
The opportunity to gain knowledge/experience and learn to question every step is outstanding
Cons
EVERYTHING is a priority
It's all about the cost ($$$$)
The never ending EPS roadmap is killing morale with all the cuts, cuts, cuts
Some members of senior management are absolutely off their rockers and thrive on power
Do more with less is the mantra
There is NO work/life balance, rather, IBM supports work/life integration. So while you can work from any remote location with an available internet connection, there is an expectation to integrate your life into your work.
Pros
Not much gives more satisfaction than knowing that you are working for a iconic American Corporation that has so many innovations under it's belly it's hard to list them all. The diversity and size of the company makes for great career opportunities if you can make yourself heard. Whether its different products, markets or professions, IBM can offer almost everything. Maybe not the best place for any particular job but if your going for diversity and general management, it's a great place to be.
Cons
There's plenty of competition and as large companies go, plenty of processes and bureaucracy as well. If you can get a strong executive team to drive your career, you can go places. If you don't get support you'll be left in the dust. Compensation is average and the company is leveraging it's reputation and the market conditions to pay below market.
Advice to Senior Management
Employee appreciation has certainly suffered with the extreme focus on earnings growth. While there are still great benefits (monetary and otherwise) to work for IBM, many perceive the company to be on a rather unappreciative trajectory towards its employees.
Pros
Even in the economy of today, IBM has continued to provide pretty favorable benefit plan options. Comprehensive medical, dental and vision plans are all still offered which in today's economy is very much needed and welcomed.
Cons
IBM continues to layoff employees practically monthly under the guise of the phrase Resource Action and the directive or reason most often given is " re-engineer and move your work to an offshore location". If work were to remain in the US would not that help with the issue of unemployment in the United States?
Advice to Senior Management
This Is Not the direction that IBM was established upon 100 years ago. The direction and choices made on challenges of today are not the expectation of IBM as a leading company but instead more often than not remind one of a follower.
Pros
Great exposure to technology and domain expretise.
Cons
Slow career growth and less carrer development
Pros
Virtual workplace if you happen to work in non consulting job
Good compensation and benefits
Lots of resources at your disposal
Cons
Really hard to advance. It took me 10 years to figure out that one is not promoted based in job performance.
Huge, and in parts very buerocratic company
Most managers are Managers In name only.
You can very, very lonely at this company
Pros
Good brand to keep you afloat in bad economy. Not sure IBMer meanes anything with 400K emplyees.
Cons
Its a Jungle inside. everything is virtual. Like a website.
Partners are Gods. very unapproachable.
100% of GBS is travel based. travel/expense policy sucks. IBMers have lost thier class. Sole aim make wealthy share holder happy.
With 95% utilization requirement, only thing you can take is 3 days and federal/state holidays.
extremely limited salary increase. Promotion means nothing with limited salary increase.
Advice to Senior Management
Shareholders will not stop at another 100$ in stock value. Ibmers are falling apart with all the pressure from utilization, expense, limited salary growth, suck it all up attitude. IBM needs to invest time and resources in it real stake holders thats the employees.
