I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, good time off and work life balancing. Decent salaries but they will plateau. Non management personnel have some exceptional people to work with.

    Cons

Hit a glass ceiling, difficult management for technical people to work with. Work continually increasing and fewer people to handle it. Constant push to do more than be excellent at the job you are assigned. Enough is never enough. Lack of education and new opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come to understand the technical resources needed for major initiatives. The employees are dedicated to doing their best but they are not magicians.

I have been working at IBM (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Got to work with some VERY smart people. IBM has a process. My group I was in was very collaborative not all are.

    Cons

Management not always transparent, slim to no raises. You have to leave and come back for a salary increase. Lots of silos have to work hard to cross groups

    Pros

there is constant exposure to new topics, and education available. 40 hours/year dedicated education time.

    Cons

challenging to move positions across business units. Older products get 'lost' when promotions/bonuses are being doled out.

I worked at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Excellent co-workers, both socially and technically
    - Some very interesting work
    - Above-average work environment

    Cons

    - Overall direction sometimes drops "out of the sky".
    - Technical decisions swayed by outside groups. This can affect team focus.
    - Can be lots of "busy work" that doesn't seem connected with team goals. (Granted, some is unavoidable in a large company, but still...)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Choose good first-line management and let them run. Business Management 101: give them authority to match their responsibility.

I worked at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to work with smart people all over the world. Interesting problems to solve. Ability to change roles without changing companies. Generally pretty flexible with work schedule.

    Cons

Myself and my whole team of experienced (high performing) professionals were fired in 2013. The company is on a short term EPS path; achieving numbers via cost-cutting, which causes a downward spiral to the whole business. The practices hurt innovation (contrary to goals in the press), because employees are obviously not valued, and constantly in fear of losing their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating employees like disposable equipment.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great place to work if your a software engineer, you will have a job for life. Work/life balance is great. Pay is fair. Lots of vacation and paid time off. Good benefits.

    Cons

If your a hardware engineer you will have to be in the right group or you will always have to worry about the next layoff, which happens every year like clockwork. Upper Management is lost and appear to have no clue what they are doing. Apparently the only way they can make money is to lay people off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have 15 layers of Management, that is insane. Bring back respect for the individual. Your people are your backbone and your future, trying taking care of them.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Large company with some great people to work with. Work from home for some while others work on site. Always looking to use home grown tech to make jobs and functions easier.

    Cons

Poor compensation, no raises and this year no bonus. If you are looking at joining IBM drive hard for compensation upfront since that is all you can look forward too. On client site requirements are 4 days a week and work tends to be micro managed by management who usually have much less experience and time at IBM. Rating system highly political and secretive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You forgot who really does all of the work, managers just manage paper, while workers work.

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Culture is generally encouraging. Many smart people to work with.

    Cons

Metrics everywhere tied to financial models, (make the 2015 plan at all cost!) not employee or customer sat (tho these are tracked, they are secondary to "make the financial plan".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that employees will engage in "the vision" only if they can also benefit in the results. When you stop recognizing the value of the employees (especially in North America), you have lost what is most vital to the firm.
