    Challenging and rewarding

ProsYou get to work with the best in the field and with people with a range of experiences across the spectrum from less than a year to more than 25 years at the company. Excellent projects, opportunity to publish, patent, impact IBM and have tremendous personal growth.

ConsYour experience is driven by your first line manager. Some teams only consist of 3 or 4 people, so managers tend to micromanage.

    Too big sometimes complicated

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsVery resourceful environment, a lot of people to learn from

ConsToo many meetings; for every project you need to update 10s of people

Want to do research? Go elsewhere !

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsLots of freedom in your day-to-day activities, so if you have an appointment or family commitment you can attend.

ConsNo real research is done here. Most projects are chosen by looking at what the competition is doing and how we could develop the same thing. Since everyone needs to publish a paper and/or file a patent each year to just get an average rating, no long term or risky projects are ever done. Therefore, only short term projects that provide incremental changes are chosen.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be afraid of failure, because there is no success without lots of failures first.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Still top industrial research lab but for how long?

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsInteresting work on border between industry and research.

Conssenior management lost touch with market, IBM outside Research is still in denial about changes such as cloud, refuses to read and understand "Innovator's Dilemma"

Advice to Senior Managementmore market validation, less micro management, need long term investment and not few months until next report, abandon EPS before it is too late ... invest into deep change and give people freedom and responsibility to make it happen

    Interesting, hard to navigate.

    RSM (Current Employee)

ProsChallenging, good working environment. Flexible working hours, if needed ability to work remotely. Collaborative and productive research environment.

ConsLots of uncertainty regarding job security and very hard career growth. Flexible working hours sometimes means you have to work at all times.

I have a great run, these days, the company is beset by layoffs

    Research Staff Member (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

    Pros1) Good smart colleagues
    2) Flexible work hours
    3) License to learn new things, and come up with completely new ideas

Cons1) The company seems to be run by bean-counters. These are MBA types that do not care about technology, and don't take into account any considerations which do not have quantifiable monetary value. For example, how much do free snacks contribute? Travel to talk to colleagues overseas?
    2) Slow decision making process
    3) Difficult to transition ideas and code from research to development.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop talking in earnings per share, and stock buy back. Employees could not care less.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
