I have been working at IBM Research full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Its a good place to do research. Very few pure research labs left. Researchers here are great and scope of collaboration is good as well. Very very flexible and work life balance is great here.

    Cons

Low pay, no stock options. There can be bureaucracy and getting things moving can be hard, especially if you are working towards a product impact. If your aim is academic impact then it is a very good place.

I worked at IBM Research full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good place to expand skills and knowledge, lots of smart people to learn from. Having this employer and location on your resume is a great door opener for future jobs. Because the average IQ is so high, you'll have lots of dinner stories about eccentric behavior.

    Cons

Professional staff members are mostly interested in advancing their own inventions and career. They have little interest in working together on projects where credit will be shared.

I have been working at IBM Research full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Freedom of choosing projects and colleagues is very high, opportunities to work from home, short hours, flexible leave/vacation policy.

    Cons

Projects that are tied to clients weigh disproportionately in yearly reviews. Easy to get sucked into uninteresting projects because of that. Compensation is good but doesn't match top IT companies. Personal growth opportunities do not abound. End-of-year 401k matching.

    Pros

You get to work with the best in the field and with people with a range of experiences across the spectrum from less than a year to more than 25 years at the company. Excellent projects, opportunity to publish, patent, impact IBM and have tremendous personal growth.
