I have a great run, these days, the company is beset by layoffs

Research Staff Member (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at IBM Research full-time for more than 10 years

Pros1) Good smart colleagues
2) Flexible work hours
3) License to learn new things, and come up with completely new ideas

Cons1) The company seems to be run by bean-counters. These are MBA types that do not care about technology, and don't take into account any considerations which do not have quantifiable monetary value. For example, how much do free snacks contribute? Travel to talk to colleagues overseas?
2) Slow decision making process
3) Difficult to transition ideas and code from research to development.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop talking in earnings per share, and stock buy back. Employees could not care less.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great place to intern

Research Intern (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at IBM Research as an intern for less than a year

Prosgood money, smart co-workers, task is well-defined that you can make progress in a 3 month internship. The selection process was well-defined. It was clear from the job requisition what they expected you to do and there were no trick questions during the interview. You have a mentor and a boss and they really are all rooting for you to do well.

ConsThe only thing I can think of is that the location is far from down town. If you don't have a car, you have to use the company bus (that picks people up from the train station) and it only runs till a certain time. So that constrains when you can come in to work and how late you can stay. Also because of the location, you are forced to eat the cafetaria food (if you don't bring in your lunch).

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you're doing with the internship program. It really helps a lot of us build confidence in our research abilities

Decent place to get research experience.

Summer Research Intern (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at IBM Research as an intern for less than a year

ProsThis place has talented researchers and helpful HR folks. To be able to work with people whose work has been covered in textbooks is quite eye-opening. Compensation is reasonable. Your experience depends a lot on the mentor. So be careful to know the mentor before accepting to intern.

ConsLocation is not so exciting. Food is below average and kind of expensive for its worth. Nothing is free -- not even a cup of coffee.

Fantastic people, but changing mentality

IBM Postodoc (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at IBM Research full-time for more than a year

ProsI worked at the Almaden research center and in the Yorktown research center
Great research with state-of-the-art equipment.
Very knowledgeable people, who are also friendly and reliable
Still good core values of the IBM company, with people doing their whole 40-year career at IBM
Personnel encouraged to patent, publish and go to conferences
Internal recognition through awards

ConsCompensation below microelectronics industry average
Hard to obtain information on the technology orientation for future processor generations
Company starts to rely too heavily on process improvement rather than disruptive innovation
Excessive bureaucracy
Recurrent budget restrictions even though IBM Research is highly profitable

Advice to Senior ManagementGive a chance to innovative technologies invented and developed by the talented
Restrict less your staff financially (inability to travel/go to conferences, excessive paperwork for common purchases), a lot of energy is wasted trying to fight the system rather than be innovative. A certain number of talented young researchers want to leave the company as a result.
