    Pros

Great Company - Very Smart People. IBM, has the resources (Mainframe, PHD's, MBA's, Systems, processes & procedures, data centers, Watson) to solve a ton of problems. If you're able to interact with these resources, understand how rear that opportunity is.

    Cons

The organization's 400,000 global employees requires a hierarchal structure similar to that of the US government, when it comes to its decision making process.

    Advice to Management

Be bullish about the following: your work, completing each task, satisfying clients, and the companies and your unit's bottom line.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Huge variety of projects, with opportunities in pretty much every field. Access to internal experts in each field. Access to experts in the whole chain of operations right from Industry SMEs to technology experts to technology support people, everyone within the same company.

    Cons

Less control over the kind of projects one wants to work on. Excess emphasis on billing and utilization during yearly ratings. Work life balance not maintained but varies from project to project.

    Advice to Management

Compared to other services companies, there is lesser importance given within IBM on whether employees are satisfied with their work. No counselling or mentoring is inbuilt into the system and is all left to chance and individual networking. I think there is a lot of lost potential because of this gap.

I have been working at IBM full-time

    Pros

IBM has many interesting technologies and projects: Watson, mobile, cloud, analytic. Work with many talented engineers and managers who are willing to share knowledge. Great 401k benefit plan.

    Cons

IBM has a very top-down management style. Initiatives are likely going to start from the top. Engineers with creativity and innovations and lots of motivations are likely going to get little frustrated by the top-down management style.

    Advice to Management

There are duplicate produces and features from different organizations targeted to same market. Teams may need to be more nimble and agile. Organizing based on projects or products may be a good idea than organization based on functional areas.

I have been working at IBM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Large company with a lot of room for growth, both vertically and horizontally. If you want to move up or branch out, it's not too difficult.

    Cons

Strange work/life balance, but I don't know if it's much worse than other companies. The culture is pretty hit or miss.

    Advice to Management

Not much to add which hasn't been said in other reviews. Focus on work/life balance. That's probably the largest concern.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at IBM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to learn many business areas, industries and develop positive relationships with many customers. Also had opportunities to travel domestically and globally in support of various accounts. Benefits and vacation time were very good.

    Cons

Constant learning requirements and extended work hours left little time for any true work life balance. The company also initiated numerous layoff's which significantly affected the overall morale of personnel still working with the company. Layoff's also negatively affected overall productivity in many organizations. The layoff process was quite impersonal and harsh. Raises were non existant for the 4 of the last 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Your employees are the people that helped make your company successful. The many years of experience should be valued and appreciated.
