Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic

Staff Hardware Engineer (Current Employee)
Rochester, MN

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI have nothing good to say at this point

Cons20% underpaid versus the market, pay freezes, bonuses are almost unheard of, all decisions are made based on the 2015 roadmap which means they are focused on reducing costs at all costs with no thought to the long-term ramifications

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up, morale in both hardware and software is absolutely non existant. You've taken pretty much everything possible away (secretaries, supply cabinets, Thanks awards, snow removal from the parking lots, pensions, bonuses). Everyone I talk to on a regular basis is actively looking for other employment.

Little pay for little work.

Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
Rochester, MN

I have been working at IBM full-time for less than a year

Pros-Big Company (Could be good or bad)
-Nice people

Cons-Terrible training
-Nothing to do most of the time with exception of month-ends.
-Have to work some weekends even when you have about 1 hour of work to do
-Brutal pay, but HEY you aren't doing **** anyways

Advice to Senior Management-Learn how to train people
-Increase pay, but provide more work to individuals, many people could take the work of 2 or 3 others and have no problem (save IBM lots of money). I would gladly have twice the work for only 50% more pay.

No longer world class

Development Engineer (Current Employee)
Rochester, MN

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIBM employees still have good reputation, even though management does not.

ConsExecutives have totally rejected the values and principles of the Watsons. People are not valued, and short term profit is pursued by cutting quality, service, and skilled employees. Effectively no raises for most US employees for the last decade except for executives. Bloated bureaucracy with 5-6 layers of vice presidents (out of 8-9 layers of management) between the average professoinal and the CEO. Just when it seems morale can't get any lower, executives find a way to knock it down more. Withholding 401k match is the latest scheme.

It was fine

Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
Rochester, MN

I worked at IBM full-time for more than a year

ProsThe COE is a place where you can start your career, but it also is probably not the best place to make your career flourish.

ConsThere are very few chances for advancement within the COE, and most people who go to work at the COE are gone within 2 weeks.

A stepping stone to a more desirable career

Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
Rochester, MN

I worked at IBM as an intern for less than a year

ProsExtremely flexible schedules. As long as your work is done, you can do pretty much whatever you want. Ping-pong tables consumed a lot of my downtime.

Everyone gets an office, that's pretty cool too. It stays a lot quieter to do work.

ConsThere isn't a healthy medium of workload. You're either sitting around doing nothing for weeks at a time, or you're so overloaded with work that you have to come in early, stay late, then bring your laptop home at night to get more work done. Due to different timezones, phone meetings aren't always scheduled at convenient times (think lunch time).

Advice to Senior ManagementWork out a better training program. Managers/supervisors should be able to answer my technical questions, not send me on a chase to find the answers.

28 years with IBM, was great at the beginning, could not wait to leave at the end.

Staff Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Rochester, MN

I have been working at IBM

ProsLots of opportunity to learn and build your skils.

ConsLong hours. Company only cares about showing a profit, no longer has any real concern for it's employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit worrying about making large dividends. Start caring about your employees again so they car about the company.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
