    I worked at IDEO full-time

    Pros

Brilliant people with a great deal of passion

    Cons

Zero clear career tract and bordering on a cult, with forced studio-wide lunches, no matter how busy you are with actual work. It seems that in certain aspects, sociopaths do quite well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's too much ambiguity and non-hierarchical structures don't exist in reality. There are people in charge and others with no say, whatsoever, so please stop waxing on and on about the flat hierarchy. Hierarchy isn't bad if it's efficient, fair, and based on merit.

I have been working at IDEO full-time

    Pros

Work here for a crash course in innovation consulting, and to learn human-centered design from the place that invented it. The people are almost all among the nicest, smartest, and most collaborative you'll ever meet.

    Cons

Work life balance is sometimes off. Career growth is about taking on more of a client/business relationship. People at the top are essentially sales, not designers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep working on opening up career tracks for designers. Experiment with ways to improve work/life balance.

I worked at IDEO as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Surrounded by a creative, open minded and social community. A learning environment, where everybody is constantly sharing things they've learned. IDEO fosters an environment for personal growth.

    Cons

You have to keep up. Because the environment is so social and shared, you have to give as much as you take. Can be an intimidating group of individuals to impress. Can be some quiet competition going on if you look close.

I have been working at IDEO full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Cool people to work with, cool technology and pretty free and open culture.

    Cons

VERY click'ish, almost cult'ish. If you are not in the "in" crowd you will not advance. Senior leadership is very detached from what really happens with the employees, partners that gossip rather than lead. If you are not a designer (e.g. support), you are second class.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your support team, they deserve it. Lead more, talk less.

I have been working at IDEO full-time

    Pros

Probably the best place I've ever worked in terms of community. There is a real warmth and genuine interest in others. It's a place where curiosity is indulged and cultivated.

    Cons

What everyone says about the salaries are true. Definitely not enough. It can be a hard place to navigate if you aren't very self-directed.
