    Pros

Growing, strong organization, very good hold on their market share

    Cons

Extremely poor middle management group in Westbrook. They don't allow input outside their little circles of managers that want to control everything, but do not understand the real business needs or opportunities.
A group of Managers that protect each other and do what it takes to survive.

    Advice to Management

Upper Management needs to get out and truly understand the world their middle Managers proclaim to represent, but really don't.

    Pros

The company is financially secure and there are a lot of perks: a world class cafeteria, a beautiful on-site gym and free clinic. Executive leadership is smart and and makes good decisions overall.

    Cons

    Frustrating. Political. Dead Weight.

In many departments, IDEXX can't get out of its own way. There are so many analytic thinkers working there that it takes months make a decision and several more months to implement even the smallest and most reasonable of process changes. This is exacerbated by a culture of employees that simply "coast" for years in the same role. These types are typically the "authority" in their given area but are unmotivated to make improvements and threatened by change.

If you're a big picture thinker, you should only work for IDEXX at an executive-level, otherwise you'll likely never have the audience or the support to implement any meaningful changes there. Mid-level managers do a very poor job of managing up and anyone below 500 level is treated like an admin.

    Advice to Management

Good ideas can come from anywhere, not just your boss' boss' boss.

    Pros

Health benefits are nice and a gym at the corporate office is a plus.

    Cons

I started a training program with the company, they said they value their Employee's but when it comes to training, you better ask a lot of questions and get hands on because if you don't you will be out on your butt. I thought that training classes meant just that, training, nor expert. Ask questions, get experience, then perform, and progress. I didn't find this to be true. Don't trust your neighbors or the trainers; if you are not the controller or the dominating type, you are going to be let go.

    Advice to Management

If employee's are your focus than train them right, give them the tools to do the job, and watch them work, give them a chance to win at their jobs before you escort them out the door.

    Pros

IDEXX can be a very rewarding place to work when everyone works together, both for salary and a pride in any job you are doing. It is an excellent company that provides top notch equipment for veterinarians to do diagnostics in-clinic or has reference laboratories for veterinarians to send their specimens out. The company is located all over the globe with headquarters being in Maine. They do try to run a company that is healthy and responsible towards their employees and clients.

    Cons

It only takes a few bad eggs to bring everything down. This is unfortunately the case in Canada. The moral is very low across the entire country because upper management is not being monitored properly by the CEO, CFO and HR in the United States. The antics that go on would never be tolerated if they were known. Sadly, this has caused a lot of excellent people who cared about the company to disappear. So far, it seems not to have affected the quality of service, but it is currently at its worst point after 4 years of decline. Hopefully, someone in Maine will wake up and take a closer look so the company and its employees can thrive again.

    Advice to Management

I highly recommend that Management in the USA open their eyes and actually speak to employees across the country and actually listen to what they have to say about upper management in Canada. I think they will be very surprised by what they hear. They might even consider calling a few "past" employees to understand their situations as "Exit" interviews were only done when HR felt they could either use the information against someone or they knew it would be positive. Canada is not being run to the high standards in the States and elsewhere. Hopefully, this wonderful company will wake up before it is too late.

    Pros

Friendly and approachable people, lots of experience to draw on, interesting projects underway, good attitude toward new people. Learned a lot.

    Cons

The building is vast, so you may get lost at first. I heard some groups are better to work with than others. Not many young people.

    Advice to Management

You might want to invest in training some young people. Many critical positions are filled by people near retirement age.

    Pros

Good pay. Great people to work with. Products which help in the world. Good mission statement and community involvement.

    Cons

Lack of mentorship. IDEXX suffers from growing too fast. They have also grown the big company mentality of expendable people. I saw other reviews citing ageism. I support those claims but the company has learned from the past and creates situations where no claims of this would stick.

    Advice to Management

Value local and experienced knowledge. Work harder to create an honest environment.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are average to above average. If you buy into their ideals and believe that "the company" truly cares about the industries it supports then you will have an opportunity to feel a great sense of satisfaction from your work. There is a positive sense of belonging or family culture that really draws people in. You'll find the employees are so absorbed in what's going on at work that it is all they can talk about outside of work.

I personally bought in and took pride in feeling like I could make a difference but unfortunately it is common place for the hard workers to get more work and not a great deal of additional benefit other than potentially moving into higher ranking positions that sometimes do and sometimes do not offer a great deal of additional reward.

    Cons

There are many opportunities to feel like management cares more about the bottom line than it's employees or the customers; sometimes this is true and sometimes it is not. Working in the tech support group exposes you to all of the shortfalls of the software and it becomes hard to see the good that is offered to the customers although the good is there and the products being offered often far exceed that of their competitors. Change is rapid and sometimes not well thought out. Short term fixes are often put ahead of long term planning.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees and they will take you a long way. Put a little more weight on addressing the difficult challenges with your products instead of being so fixed on the next big shiny thing. Spend a little more time considering the repercussions of change before setting things in motion.
