I worked at IDOT full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Really good state benefits. Lots of very professional people and experts (engineers, planners, etc) -- felt like a professional environment.

    Cons

Not enough staff to do everything we needed to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at IDOT as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

The work was manageable, and the managers were really helpful at teaching what needed to be done. Even with no prior experience.

    Cons

Not too many cons, other than being a part of the system in Illinois.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    All went well.

I have been working at IDOT as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Not too intensive job. Learning some basic field things. Mostly road construction. You get to be outside and improve your people skills. Good pay for a state internship.

    Cons

If you are not a Civil Engineer, you will not learn too much. It can get very hot sometimes. It doesn't take an engineering degree to take measurements and to fill up reports.

I have been working at IDOT full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

IDOT has an overall positive work environment. The people seem generally happy to work here, unlike some other state agencies, and the benefits and pay are very competitive with private industry in the local central Illinois market based on my experience. My coworkers are generally smart and competent people, and typically are hard workers, again, unlike the reputation of many other agencies.

    Cons

Like all state agencies in Illinois, you have to be unionized to get a raise. Many people, especially professionals, may not like having to join a union upon being hired. You have to pay dues that end up getting used to fund party-politics campaigns.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No real complaints. Secretary Ann Schneider has been an excellent leader.
